Jill Biden causes $7800 Oscar de la Renta dress to sell out
Despite its huge price-tag, shoppers have snapped up a designer dress the future first lady wore in a frenzy dubbed “the Jill Biden effect”.
Her husband has just been named as the president-elect of the US elections – but is Jill Biden about to steal Melania Trump’s fashion icon status?
The future first lady has become an overnight style icon after she caused a designer dress to sell out in minutes in a frenzy some have dubbed the “Jill Biden effect”.
The 69-year-old wore a midnight blue dress adorned with bold flower embroidery by New York-based brand Oscar de la Renta when she joined her husband and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on stage in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday night.
The striking dress – which features an asymmetrical hemline – is from the designer’s resort 2020 collection and reportedly costs $US5690 ($7813).
Jill – who has a doctorate in education – finished the sleek look with a co-ordinating face mask and red Jimmy Choo heels, according to Footwear News.

Despite its juicy price-tag, the next FLOTUS caused a frenzy for the designer garment, selling out online just hours after she was pictured wearing it according to British newspaper the Daily Telegraph.
Sales on designer outlet website The Outnet where the dress was on sale for the reduced price of $US1707 ($2343) saw the item snapped up by those wanting to channel Dr Biden’s chic style.
Melania has become well-known for her expensive outfits since entering the White House in 2017 – once famously wearing a $US51,000 ($70,000) Dolce & Gabbana jacket to an official event at Chierici Palace in Catania, Italy.
Dr Biden’s choice in dress is set to become an iconic moment in history and reportedly pays homage to former first ladies before her.
While Oscar de la Renta died in 2014, the brand’s Instagram page shared a behind-the-scenes snap of co-creative director Fernando Garcia applying finishing touches to the stunning garment along with in-house dressmaker Luis.
“A closer look at incoming First Lady Dr. Jill Biden’s dress, which features house-signature asymmetric drapery and spirited floral-vine embroidery,” the caption read.
The brand has a long history of dressing first ladies, including Hillary Clinton and Nancy Reagan.
But according to Business Insider, there may be a deeper meaning behind Dr Biden choosing the designer for her first official appearance.
Garcia along with the brand’s other co-creative director Laura Kim are both immigrants – with Kim born in Korea and raised in Canada while Garcia grew up in the Dominican Republic.
“Jill’s choice to work with them arguably lies in stark contrast to the current president’s attitude towards immigrants, as President Trump has a history of making harmful policies and false claims about immigrants,” the report states.
Dr Biden wasn’t the only woman who was noticed in the style stakes during the speech, with Kamala Harris’ white Carolina Herrera pantsuit that she had layered over a cream pussy-bow blouse also capturing attention.
On Twitter, some claimed the outfit marked a moment in history, stating “it was for posterity” and labelling it “powerful”.
Everything about @KamalaHarris speech is perfect. White suit (suffragettes), music, confidence. And every word. Every single word. What a salute to all women who have fought so hard throughout history. Powerful. Amazing. #USElection2020
