Kmart is selling a new variation of an expensive wardrobe staple for just $49 – but the affordable garment has divided shoppers.
Trench coats often retail for hundreds of dollars, with one cult brand selling its version for $950.
However, despite the often eye-watering price, the humble trench is beloved by wearers for its classic shape and neutral colours that go with everything.
The budget retailer however has just released a “Denim Trench Coat”, offering a modern twist on the popular coat, and it’s fair to say Kmart shoppers are divided.
Popular Australian stylist Sarah Strozkiy, who posts under the username @shessoseasonal, shared her “honest” thoughts on the denim trench – declaring it a “one-off trend”.
“If you are someone who loves following trends, then definitely go for it,” she said on TikTok.
“but just keep in mind that it’s one of those pieces that will probably sit in your wardrobe and you’ll never wear it again.
“Not like a regular trench coat, in a neutral colour like a black or a nice camel or cream, or even a denim jacket.”
However there were others who said they “love” the jacket, stating they had “ordered it instantly” after seeing it online.
“This $49 @kmart Australia trench is everything!!” TikTok user @biancaaccurso said, alongside a video of her trying the coat on in-store.
She paired the blue number, which according to the brand’s website is oversized, with a white T-shirt and a pair of beige pants.
“I ran to the website thank you,” one responded.
“This is a vibe,” another shared.
“My manager sent me this and I kid you placed order in less than 10 mins. Love love it,” someone else added.
Others said the item was “so good” for its price, pointing out popular Australian brand One Teaspoon has a denim trench on sale at the moment for $349.
Kmart’s website said the fabric is made from a polyester, cotton, viscose, acrylic and nylon blend and stated it was “designed to fade”.
It’s not the first time Kmart has released a trench coat, which was released last year in a “sandstone” colour and was spotted back on shelves in 2024.
“The versatility of the trench is why customers are all wanting to own it – it’s great for casual weekend dressing with jeans and a T-shirt or knit as the weather starts to cool down,” a Kmart spokesperson told news.com.au in April last year.
“Alternatively it’s a great layering piece for dressing up over a top and skirt or a great dress with heels.”
Shoppers were instantly taken with the wardrobe item, raving about it online.
“This is the best $49 I have ever spent at Kmart,” a TikTok user named Emma Jane Hanson wrote at the time.
“Would never guess it’s Kmart,” another stated.
“I got it, how amazing is it,” one woman agreed.
Target has also recently got in on the trench action, selling an oversized trench for $80 that has been described as a “dupe” of the $950 Fernando Trench from Camilla and Marc.
“This could be the dupes to end all dupes,” Claudia Coy, social media producer at news.com.au’s Checkout said.
