David Jones kicks off the spring/summer season: Jessica Gomes led the way as celebrities watched from the sidelines

FORGET winter - the fashion world is always looking forward, and the David Jones spring-summer fashion launch didn’t disappoint. Here’s all the news/gossip/videos.

Jessica Gomes ready to launch

IT could have been just the unseasonably warm weather, but sizzling Aussie supermodel Jessica Gomes scorched the runway at David Jones spring/summer collection show.

The face (and body) of DJs was joined by fellow red-hot models Montana Cox and Jason Dundas at the summer fashion showcase while celebrities Rachel Griffiths, Claudia Karvan and Rachael Finch watched from the front rows.

The 28-year-old said her favourite piece was a black Jets swimsuit, and when she stepped on to the runway in it, it was clear why. The results of the Perth model’s strict Paleo diet were clear as she strutted a very different physique to her runway appearance at last year’s parade.

DJs head of merchandise Donna Player said this year’s parade not only marked the start of a new season but a new start for the company, which has been bought by South African giant Woolworths.

“Spring/summer always heralds the arrival of newness in our business, and it’s the launch of our summer season ahead of Christmas,’’ she said.

The brand unveiled a raft of new designers to be stocked by the store, including Manning Cartell, Rebecca Vallance and The Upside.

“We’re seeing florals, beautiful embellishment and black and white which is a nod to our heritage and a trend we do very well with,” Ms Player said.News_Image_File: Jessica Gomes dressed by Scanlan Theodore. Dundas, who is enjoying his high profile as a TV personality and DJs ambassador, showcased pieces from the new menswear offerings, causing a commotion when he stepped out in a pair of skimpy shorts.

“They’re very European,” Dundas said. “It’s the first time I’ve revealed that much on the runway.”

While his physique was the result of hard work, Dundas couldn’t say the same about his summer glow, revealing he and twins Jordan and Zac Stenmark needed to get a spray tan.

The event saw a wave of new looks — with crunches and fake tan topping the style set’s to-do list, and crop tops and white defining the mood.

Ambassadors Jessica Gomes, Montana Cox and Jason Dundas rocked the catwalk in threads by some of the country’s hottest designers.

Megan Gale was a notable no show but she had good reason. It’s only been a couple of months since she gave birth to her first child, a son named River.

But her swimwear brand Isola was one of the hottest appearances on the catwalk.

“Isola is one of our key swimwear brands and it continues to delight us season after season,”

Jessica Gomes opened the show in Manning Cartell.

Gomes had more than a bare midriff on her agenda, prepping her body to walk in swimwear in front of hundreds of people.

She describes her routine leading up to the show as: “exercising every day, no sugar, no carbs’’.

The return of the skirt complements the crop top.

“Look for a high-waisted skirt. It’s really flattering and sexy but showing some skin,’’ Gomes said.

Womenswear general manager Sophie Clarke described the new season as “fresh, colourful and exciting’’.

“It’s huge,’’ she said of the midriff-baring trend. “You’ve got to feel confident to carry it off — it’s not for everybody.’’

She suggested looking for cutout elements if showing your belly button was too much.

“Zimmermann and Lover have beautiful dresses with cutouts. They’re less exposed and a little more sophisticated with not too much flesh going on.’’

White is the colour of the season, reflecting a move toward a minimalist, sport luxe aesthetic.

“You need a good tan. It looks fresh and talks to summer. Mixing textures looks more interesting,’’ Clarke said.

Gomes said: “It’s a beautiful colour for an event. If you’re not going all white, wear a white trouser with a stripey shirt.”

Clarke suggests a new floral swimsuit and lighter-coloured jeans to revive your summer wardrobe.

New labels appearing for the department store include Jodhi Meares’ active wear range The Upside and Woolmark regional winner Strateas. Carlucci.

The model has gone from peroxide blonde to brunette and back again several times over the past few months.

“It’s been about six or seven colours this past few weeks,” Cox told Confidential.

“My hair is telling me to stay this colour now. And I think DJs is much more into it being brown.”

Cox, 20, who is based in New York and is one of our biggest modelling exports dyed her hair peroxide blonde for a shoot overseas.

“I much prefer my hair brunette,” she laughed.

The model will spend the next few weeks in Australia and is looking forward to some down time with her family in Melbourne.

“It’s all work but I’m looking forward to spending time with my family,” she said.

As for her love life, Cox says she’s single and open to meeting the right person.

“I don’t have a boyfriend,” she said. “Find him for me.”
