US Vice President Kamala Harris slammed for wearing ‘problematic’ Dolce & Gabbana

US Vice President Kamala Harris has found herself in hot water after it emerged she’s been wearing a fashion brand with a “problematic” past.

Kamala Harris has been criticised for wearing clothes by Dolce & Gabbana, a luxury brand that has been described as “problematic”.

The Italian fashion label has been criticised for advertising campaigns and clothing lines that have been called out as racially offensive.

So when the new US Vice President, who was praised for wearing clothes by three black-owned brands during inauguration events, wore a black D&G polo neck during lunch with President Joe Biden recently, people had a lot to say about it.

In a series of posts on Instagram Stories, Vittoria Vignone, who runs the popular page Kamala’s Closet, asked followers if the decision was an “oversight” by Kamala’s team.

“It’s possible but also incredibly sloppy,” she wrote, according to The Guardian.

“They could and should be better, especially after the triumphs of last week. The timing of this so soon after her inaugural choices championed lesser-known American designers of colour is awful no matter how you look at it.”

“Someone seriously needs to tell her team about Dolce and their problematic issues with race. I’m stunned she would wear them,” one commenter agreed.

The lace panelled wool sweater – which retails for $1200 in Australia – isn’t the only D&G item Kamala has worn by the brand, being seen a few days later in the $1095 chevron round-neck sweater.

This caused even more of a stir, with many asking: “Is no one telling her?”

“Why all the Dolce? All the black-owned brands last week, now this. Hoping her team picks up on this. Absolutely not!” one wrote.

“Gahhhh someone needs to tell her about D&G!” another said.

While one stated: “More D&G? Her stylist should do more research. This could get ugly.”

Some argued it would be wasteful for Kamala to just stop wearing designer clothes that had already been bought, suggesting she may not have been aware of the brand’s history until now.

“Serious question though – do you just like stop wearing pieces you already own? I have D&G glasses and had no idea about the backstory. Am I just supposed to toss them? I obviously wouldn’t buy more, but I won’t waste what I have either.”

She also wore Dolce & Gabbana’s micro check print blazer in recent days which retails for a whopping $1890.

DOLCE & GABBANA BACKLASH

In 2018, D&G released advertising seen to be racially offensive, including an ad where an Asian model is seen attempting to eat pizza and spaghetti with chopsticks.

Co-founder Stefano Gabbana was also alleged to have made racist comments describing China with a poo emoji in screenshots that were leaked and shared on Instagram.

The furore caused the brand to cancel a runway show in Shanghai and Gabbana and co-founder Domenico Dolce issued a video offering their “sincerest apologies” to Chinese people globally, apologising for “misunderstanding Chinese culture”.

MELANIA WAS A FAN OF D&G

Melania Trump was a fan of the Italian fashion label, famously wearing a jacket by the brand to an official event that cost nearly $70,000.

She also wore a black pant suit by D&G paired with a white button-up top and finished the look with simple black pumps on election night – an outfit that was described by some as “grim”.
