Edwards has recently opened up about the effects of being diagnosed as perimenopausal at the age of just 39.

The mum-of-one – who shares son Justice with ex-partner Dan Single – revealed the private health battle in March, telling Stellar that in the midst of juggling “being a mum and a businesses owner … what I didn’t notice were the changes taking place to my female reproductive health”.

Opening up further while speaking about the statement shirt she created for this year’s Witchery White Shirt Campaign – the profits of which go to funding ovarian cancer research – Edwards described the diagnosis as “a huge wake-up call”.

“I hit early menopause at 39, which is something so many women struggle with privately, and it was a huge wake-up call,” she said at an event for the campaign’s launch.

“I was in denial, enduring symptoms for so long, because I simply didn’t know what it was and I didn’t think it could be me.

“I wish I knew more about female health before my diagnosis and, to be completely honest, it wasn’t really a priority.”

After becoming emotional, Edwards said she hoped to “put a spotlight on women’s health and encourage conversation as I don’t feel there is enough of it”.

“I have regrets about my lack of knowledge, but unlike so many other women, my diagnosis wasn’t ovarian cancer. But for those women, it’s often too late – and this campaign helps combat the stigma.”

Because Edwards’ diagnosis coincided with the pandemic and a hold on elective surgeries, she was also unable to freeze her eggs – meaning the option of having any more children was ruled out.

While she hadn’t necessarily been planning on having another baby, Edwards – whose last public relationship was with cricketer Michael Clarke – told Mamamia’s No Filter podcast she felt like she had to mourn the situation because “it was about having the choice”.

“Not because of the desire to have another kid, but just that I wasn’t prepared to not. I still actually think about it – what if I meet the man of my dreams but a big part of his dream has children? What does that conversation look like?”
