Melbourne Cup VIP attendees dress code: the rules and rule breakers

A fully vaccinated crowd of 5,500 spectators are attending Derby Day today – the opening event of Flemington’s four-day Melbourne Cup carnival.

And Sydney’s not missing out on the racing fun either, with celebs including Sam Armytage and Jules Robinson flocking to the Golden Eagle.

In Melbourne, it’s a much smaller event than Derby Day’s usual 90,000-odd spectators – but there are still plenty of fashions on the field, with a traditional black and white dress code in order for both women and men.

Actress and model Olympia Valance gave the cameras a twirl in this matching dress, hat and gloves:

Sydney’s also playing host to a racing event today, with the Golden Eagle taking place at Rosehill Gardens.

VIP attendees of the prestigious Melbourne Cup have always been subjected to strict dress codes.

Rules for permitted attire inside the highly regarded members areas such as the Birdcage include “no garments which show midriff” as well as a ban on short jumpsuits and playsuits.
