The Beauty Diary: Dry shampoo trick you need to know
Tired? You’re not alone. But a “game-changing” trick that saves time in the morning is growing in popularity – and it really works.
“Work smarter, not harder.”
Those are four words an old boss of mine once said to me and I’ve never forgotten them.
Not only is it a brilliant piece of advice but it can also apply to many things in life – including our beauty products.
It’s also why I love this game-changing dry shampoo tip given to me by Sydney hairdresser Alex Fuchs recently.
Now brace yourselves people, because this really will shake up the way you use this very popular hair product.
According to Alex, who owns Fuchs Hair in Sydneys Alexandria and is a Batiste Dry Shampoo ambassador, the “best way” to use dry shampoo is before bed.
That’s right, spray it into your lifeless hair before you go to sleep from a 30cm distance, and the product with soak up excess oil overnight.
When you wake up, he said you will have “clean but textured” hair in the morning.
Now, I like to consider myself somewhat of a dry shampoo connoisseur. I love it because it saves me time, makes me feel better about myself for sleeping in, and is cheap because it is always on offer in supermarkets.
But I’d never heard of this before and was surprised.
However the clever folk of the internet had apparently been all over it for yonks.
I canât believe I never knew the secret of dry shampoo which is put it in your hair before you go to bed not when you wake up

Back in 2018, US hair expert Kristin Ess told Cosmopolitan all about it, explaining one of the biggest mistakes people make with the product is waiting all of a few seconds before massaging it into their roots and expecting instant results.
“If your roots are extra oily, you can spray them with dry shampoo at night before you climb into bed, so the powders can soak up excess oil while you sleep,” she said.
Even British celebrity chef Nigella Lawson had raved about it once in her column for The Times, titled “Four secrets to a happier life”.
But it turns out, I wasn’t completely alone (thanks Caroline):
So naturally, I had to try it out for myself as any chance at scoring an extra few minutes in bed in the morning is always something I’m willing to become a guinea pig for.
But I was a little dubious. I mean, going to bed with greasy hair and waking up with fresh locks sounds too good to be true.
However, the next day my hair really did look fresh and grease-free.
Now don’t get me wrong, nothing can produce clean hair like a good old fashioned wash, but it definitely gave me an extra day between washes. Score.
Or you could call it a “game-changer” like this delighted fan:
Putting dry shampoo in your hair before bed is a game changer

One thing I will point out though was I found the scent of my freshly sprayed dry shampoo was a bit overpowering when trying to sleep. So the next time I did it, I applied it an hour before bed and it made a noticeable difference.
Now that I’ve changed your life (you can thank me later) here are a few dry shampoos you can use to get that extra 20 minutes in bed.

BATISTE DRY SHAMPOO BARE
Available at Chemist Warehouse and Priceline
Price: $10.49
This lightly scented version from the world’s most popular dry shampoo brand (2.7 cans are sold by Batiste every second globally) is perfect for this night time trick as you won’t be hit by the tropical coconut smell so many other brands prefer. It also doesn’t leave any annoying white residue – a big pet peeve among dark haired users – and combs out easily the next day.
OGX ARGAN OIL OF MOROCCO DRY SHAMPOO
Available at Coles, Woolworths, Chemist Warehouse and Priceline
Price: $20
My hair can get a little dry between washes, but this refreshes my locks and also adds in a bit of moisture too. It also has a really light fragrance that appeals to me. Another lazy girl lifesaver that runs out too fast in my house.
DAVROE REVIVE DRY SHAMPOO
Available at ozhairandbeauty.com
Price: $27.95
This is a really great Australian brand with a fantastic dry shampoo. It doesn’t leave any powdery residue and I find the vegan formula is non-irritating, particularly if I have two dry shampoo days in a row (don’t judge me) and I have a bit of product build up. Love this stuff.
