Batiste dry shampoo: Cult beauty item sells 2.7 cans every second
A budget item found on supermarket shelves has shared its latest sales data, showing nearly three cans are sold every second globally.
It has been a dubbed total saviour by its loyal fans – and now we know exactly how many bottles of dry shampoo we’ve been buying around the world.
New data from Batiste shows the popular beauty product has seen an increase in sales, rising by 20 per cent.
It also revealed a whopping 2.7 cans of Batiste Dry Shampoo is sold every second, cementing the product’s place as one of the most popular beauty items in the world.
“In the past year alone, Aussie shoppers have spend more than $47 million on dry shampoo, making it clear that this beauty staple is a must-have part of the daily beauty regimen for many women,” a statement from the brand reads.
“Local scan data also reveals that Batiste Dry Shampoo remains as Australia’s dominant category leader and the ultimate hair saviour.”

The data, which shows sales in 2019 for the brand, is up from 2.25 cans sold around the world back in 2017.
In Australia, Batiste’s Dry Shampoo starts at $5 for 50ml, $10.50 for 200ml and goes up to $16 for 400ml. It’s sold in Woolworths and Coles supermarkets as well as chemists such as Priceline and Chemist Warehouse.
“Dry shampoo has long been the perfect beauty product of convenience, with 80 per cent of Aussie women using it to refresh their hair,” a Batiste statement said.
It’s a firm favourite among celebrities too, including actress Hailee Steinfeld who said it “never leaves her handbag”.
It’s popularity stems from the fact it revives dirty hair between washes, but can also be used to create volume and even hide bald patches if using the coloured variety.
Batiste ambassador and salon owner Alex Fuchs told news.com.au that despite its popularity, people often make the same mistake when it comes to using dry shampoo correctly.
“A lot of people spray it too close to the roots which causes the product to build up unevenly,” he said.
For best results, the haircare expert – who owns Fuchs Hair in Sydney’s Alexandria – recommends spraying onto dry hair from a 30cm distance and apply in sections so the product soaks up any excess oil throughout all your hair.
“If you’ve got the time, let it set for 5-10 minutes before brushing through.
“For those with really curly or frizzy hair who prefer not to use a hairbrush, massage your scalp with the tips of your fingers – this way you get the product through your roots and hair without frizzing up the end of your hair.”
He also said that one of the “best ways” to use dry shampoo is before bed as it will soak up excess oil overnight and leave you with “clean but textured” hair in the morning.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT DRY SHAMPOO
First, Alex said, you need to determine what hair type you have. Is it frizzy? Fine? Curly and full of volume? Dry, oily or both? Look and feel your whole hair, and not just the scalp to see your hair type. If you’re really unsure, it’s best to ask your hairdresser.
“The best part about using dry shampoo is that there are so many options nowadays that speak to your hair concern. Batiste, for example, have their Hair Benefits range that have been specially created for specific hair needs,” he said.
The range comes in Volume, Hydrate, De-Frizz, Damage Control and Colour Protect – each variant has been formulated with hair-loving ingredients tailored to address the hair concern.
“You can also have multiple cans of dry shampoo depending on what you need that day,” he said.
“You may need to switch to something that will give you more volume on days where your hair feels flat or stick to a more fragrant dry shampoo when you feel like you need that extra pick-me-up.”
