‘Super affordable dupe’ for $610 designer face cream
La Mer’s Crème de la Mer is hailed as one of the best items on the market but Chemist Warehouse – among others – are claiming there is a much cheaper product that is similar.
One Chemist Warehouse item is being touted as a dupe for a designer face cream with a hefty price tag.
Taking to TikTok, a worker from the chemist chain asked the account’s followers if they knew there was a dupe for the La Mer’s Crème de la Mer available at the pharmacy.
The La Mer item ranges in price with a 15ml tub costing $170, 60ml tub costing $610 and a 250ml setting back the buyer $2185.
The moisturiser claims to have a “cell-renewing Miracle Broth” that helps provide daily protection and repair.
“At first touch, sensitivities look soothed. Dryness disappears. And, with daily devotion, skin feels firmer, lines and wrinkles are visibly diminished, and a more uplifted, rejuvenated look emerges,” the product listing says.
But, the Chemist Warehouse worker calls the $5.69 Nivea Creme a “dupe” for the item, calling it “super affordable” and a classic.
“The base ingredients for both are the same,” the worker says.
Meanwhile, the video caption read: “With shared ingredients including mineral oil, petrolatum, and glycerine, shop the versatile Nivea Crème for $5.69 at Chemist Warehouse!”
The Chemist Warehouse worker isn’t the first to make the claim, with US TikTok user @sammy.mcclymonds deciding to put the rumour to the test.
Sammy said an article she read saying the main difference was that the La Mer item held a lot of antioxidants and lactic acid to help maintain skin tone, while the Nivea product lacks that.
She smell tested the items, calling them both “luxurious smelling” but the La Mer smelled floral while the Nivea version smelled a little like powder.
“These are really thick creams, so they’re going to take a while to work into the skin,” she said.
“You guys are gonna be mad me for saying this, but the La Mer works into the skin really nice. It feels lighter.”
But, she said, the Nivea version will do mostly the same job as the La Mer item.
