IT’S been around for decades and only costs $9, but the famous Mario Badescu facial spray is one of Mecca Cosmetica’s top selling items.

The Aussie beauty retailer sells one of the brand’s aloe vera and rosewater facial sprays every 20 seconds. The product launched at the same time as Mecca, back in 2007.

Facial sprays and mists have been a huge beauty trend recently.

They can be spritzed over clean skin as a toner, over makeup to set the look, or simply as a refresh throughout the day.

Mario Badescu’s is particularly popular because of the price — it’s $9 for 118ml or $17 for 236ml — and the fact that its ingredients are easy to understand.

It also comes in another scent — aloe, cucumber and green tea.

The spray costs $9 and is a cult favourite.

Mecca’s Head of Education Jacob Stanley says the product is popular with consumers looking for a dewy skin finish.

“It feels great to use on the skin, it smells wonderful and feels refreshing and it helps to bring life back to the skin, particularly if you are in an air-conditioned environment,” Mr Stanley told news.com.au.

“You can use it as a toner, or between your serum and moisturiser, or between your moisturiser and your primer …. Whatever works for you,” Mr Standey said.

“So many people get addicted and tell their friends how much they love it — that’s why its popularity has exploded in the last few years. It’s affordable, it’s effective, and it’s simple.”

The aloe vera calms, soothes and hydrates the skin, the “herbs” refers to a thyme extract and rosewater is hydrating and balancing.

It’s also a great product to use during the day to protect against pollutants, chemicals and other gross bits in the air called “free radicals”.

“Not many people know the spray contains bladderwrack extract, which is extracted from algae and does a superb job of protecting against free radical damage while also binding water into the skin to keep it bouncy and hydrated,” Mr Stanley said.

The pharmacy sold 985,000 bottles of dry shampoo last year, meaning a can was sold every 30 seconds.

Two of the most popular dry shampoo brands are Klorane and Batiste.

Klorane is a French brand that costs about $15 a can while Batiste is a little cheaper — it’s more mainstream and you can also get it at most supermarkets — and it costs about $10 a can.
