‘It was horrendous’: Bachelor star Keira Maguire’s lip filler nightmare

Bachelor star Keira Maguire has revealed the “mortifying” cosmetic mistake she made which forced her to take drastic, painful action to fix.

Cosmetic surgery disasters: Here’s why you shouldn’t get work done overseas

Reality star Keira Maguire got her first cosmetic procedure at age 23.

The 33-year-old, who rose to fame on Richie Strahan’s season of The Bachelor, began getting lip fillers a decade ago after being gifted the injections by her then-boyfriend’s mum.

From there it was Botox at age 29, a nose job a year later and a breast augmentation in 2017. She also had a set of porcelain veneers fitted last year.

But while Keira is open to cosmetic work, there’s one procedure that still haunts her — which left her housebound after she was forced to take drastic action — and now she’s warning others not to make the same mistake.

Before flying out to Fiji in late 2017 to appear on Bachelor in Paradise, Keira went to a cosmetic clinic to get her lips injected with filler.

“I specifically said to this person I only want a quarter of a ml (millilitre), I don’t want my lips to look fake, I’m going on TV,” Keira told news.com.au.

She now thinks her specific instructions meant the nurse “panicked”, with things getting worse when the reality star complained that one section of her lip looked “a little bit deflated” despite being injected with filler.

Keira believes a more experienced nurse would have known that part of her lips only looked different because of “how my teeth sit”, something she only learnt in the months since the incident.

“But she didn’t (seem to know), she continued to inject more into my lips and I’m not that educated (in lip fillers),” she said.

“So she filled it in and then I’m like, ‘But now this side’s bigger’ and ‘Now because you’ve put it in the top you’ve got to put it in the bottom as well’ because my top lip is way bigger than the bottom. It got to the point where she’d put in two mls in my lip.”

Horrified at how much had been injected, the nurse tried to reassure Keira her lips would go down.

“It’s eight times more than what I would normally get, which is absolutely ridiculous. I was going on TV in two weeks and I’m like, ‘Oh my god my lips are so big!’” Keira said.

“She’s like, ‘Don’t worry it will go down, it’s just swollen’ … (but) they didn’t go down and it was too late because I was already recording.”

Keira said she was still “mortified” by the “horrendous” results as articles still pop up from time to time using photos of her from Bachelor in Paradise.

“That’s something that I can never forget because even yesterday there was an article online with my face and my lips … I’ll never be able to live it down,” she said.

Once filming ended in Fiji and Keira returned home, she said she took immediate, drastic action.

Keira booked into a clinic to have the fillers dissolved, saying the treatment made her lips “go black” and she couldn’t leave home for three days.

“It was quite painful actually, your lips completely deflate and they go black, so you actually have a black bruised mouth for like a week,” Keira said.

Since the experience, Melbourne-based Keira will only see Dr Michael Zacheria, a Sydney ENT surgeon whom she flies up to see for her Botox and lip filler appointments.

Now she just gets minimal amounts of filler injected a few times a year and believes an experienced injectioner will always leave you with a natural look.

“When I first went on The Bachelor I had way too much Botox in my face,” Keira said.

“My friend was an injectioner, she was like, ‘I’m going to change your whole face’. She put it in my jawline because she’s like, ‘Oh, your jaw’s too prominent’.

“I’ve never actually not liked my jaw … when she did that it changed the expression on my face, so I’m like I don’t look like me.”

Keira is now encouraging other women to learn from her experience and pay more to see someone more experienced “for the sake of not looking like a freak”.

She also believes people getting injections shouldn’t feel pressured to get certain work done.

“Anyone going to someone don’t ever let anyone try and force or influence anything on you unless it’s something that you want,” Keira said.

“Because as soon as you walk into a clinic they’re going to try and make as much money from you as possible, but they’ll also try and tell you things that they think you should get … it’s so easy to fall for it because you want to look amazing.

“Anytime that I’ve let someone do something that I never really wanted initially I’ve always regretted it.”
