GetUp asks Australians to chose politicians they want targeted in federal election campaign

GetUp is asking Australians to vote for the hard-right politician they would like to see targeted in the federal election campaign.

What do Aussies think of their politicians?

GetUp is asking Australians to chose a hard-right MP they want booted from parliament ahead of this year’s federal election.

A website has been launched where Australians can choose up to three pollies they want targeted by the left-wing lobby group.

Options include Prime Minister Scott Morrison as well as Peter Dutton, Tony Abbott, Kevin Andrews, Christian Porter, Nicolle Flint, Greg Hunt, Josh Frydenberg, Barnaby Joyce and Alan Tudge.

GetUp is gearing up to take on the MPs after a survey of its members found 92 per cent wanted the organisation to target politicians standing in the way of progress on the issues they cared about.

The website lists the record of each of the politicians and their stance on issues like climate change, Manus Island and Nauru, coal-fired power and gay conversion therapy.

GetUp national director Paul Oosting said people were fed up with politicians blocking meaningful action on the issues they cared about and its members had already committed to thousands of hours of volunteering in order to make a lasting impact on election day.

“This election effort is going be huge,” he said. “The out of touch, anti-progress MPs in parliament right now are on borrowed time.

“There’s a huge groundswell of enthusiasm to turf out anyone with right-wing views on climate change, refugees and on social issues like marriage equality. We want people from all over the country to tell us who’s the worst of a bad bunch.”

A number of small groups have already emerged to campaign against former prime minister Tony Abbott’s re-election in his safe seat of Warringah and in November about 700 people attended a GetUp information session dedicated to ousting Mr Abbott from the seat.

The groups have been encouraged by the victory of independent Kerryn Phelps in former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull’s electorate of Wentworth.

Environmental group The Sunrise Project has also donated $495,000 to GetUp to ensure climate change is the number one issue at the next federal election and a recent survey of GetUp members show it’s one of their top concerns.

A record 23,000 GetUp members took part in the 2019 Federal Election Survey, which along with voter conversations, will help determine GetUp’s campaign priorities and strategy for the year ahead.

The top five issues for respondents were:

• urgent action to address climate change and stopping Adani’s Carmichael mine

• supercharging the transition to renewable energies like solar and wind

• immediate evacuation of all refugees and people seeking asylum held on Manus Island and Nauru

• ensuring Medicare, schools and other essential services are adequately funded

• protecting ABC and SBS funding, independence and integrity
