Elon Musk announced plans to form his own city called Starbase
The world’s richest man plans to form his own city saying it will be “much larger” than the town he plans to build it over.
The world’s richest man Elon Musk has announced plans to form his own city.
Musk has approached officials in Texas with a plan to create a new city called “Starbase”.
The city would formalise the unincorporated village that already surrounds the SpaceX launch facilities, however Musk said the city would ultimately be a “much larger” area.
The Tesla founder tweeted on Wednesday: “Creating the city of Starbase, Texas.”
He then added, “From thence to Mars, And hence the Stars.”
Musk’s space exploration company SpaceX is based in Boca Chica Village, an unincorporated community in Cameron County, southern Texas.

The community was devastated by a hurricane in 1967, and a potable water system has never been restored to most homes and businesses. The area does have electricity.
Before SpaceX moved into the area in 2014, its population of permanent residents was only six people.
Musk said in tweets the city of Starbase would not just seek to incorporate the entire Boca Chica Village area, but would create a city that would cover a “much larger” area.

The judge’s office from Cameron County confirmed they’d been approached over the billionaire’s plans in a statement to Business Insider.
“In the last few days, Cameron County was officially approached by SpaceX regarding Elon Musk’s interest to incorporate Boca Chica Village into the City of Starbase, Texas. Earlier today Cameron County Commissioners Court was informed of SpaceX’s endeavour,” the statement said. Local authorities stressed Musk needed to make formal requests before beginning to incorporate a city.
“If SpaceX and Elon Musk would like to pursue down this path, they must abide by all state incorporation statutes,” Eddie Trevino Jr, the Cameron County Judge said.
“Cameron County will process any appropriate petitions in conformity with applicable law.”
