Remote worker reveals cheeky reason she ducks off to the pub during the work day

A young, fully remote worker has admitted to ducking off to the pub during office hours after revealing the big issue with WFH in Australia.

Maintaining a social life isn’t easy when working full-time, with one Millennial taking multi-tasking to a new level.

Sophia, 32, recently shared on TikTok that she has been looking for places to work from with free internet, and it will score bonus points if cute men hang out there too.

The California native has been living in Sydney for a few years now and she’s noticed that, when it comes to friendships and relationships in Australia, you need to be proactive.

She runs two businesses: Swimwear brand Siempre Golden and event organisation company, Butterfly Chapter.

She works alone, so there aren’t any after-work drinks or single men from finance hanging around. Since she doesn’t want to finish work and then spend time swiping on dating apps, she’s trying to combine work and meeting people.

“I work alone and there’s not really a way to meet new people. It’s not like I’m working in the office with other people around me,” she told news.com.au.

Young woman reveals new work place dating trend

Sophia, who runs her own event business, is hyper-aware of how hard it can be to find a “deeper” connection in Sydney.

She thinks people are friendly, but moving from acquaintance to mate can be hard. She organises social mixers for her events business so people can make new friends.

When she organises these social events, she’s always struck by the fact that 90 per cent of the women who turn up are born and raised in Sydney.

“That just shows the culture here. Even if you’re born and raised here, it is hard to meet new people and connect genuinely,” she pointed out.

Sophia, who is no stranger to innovation, has been trying to work in spaces that allow for human interactions and even a potential meet-cute.

There have been some setbacks.

“The thing with cafes is the culture in Australia is very different. In America, you can stay there for hours. In Australia, it is normal to get a coffee and catch up with a friend but leave within two hours,” she said.

Because of this, she has had to get creative with ways to integrate work with socialising.

Now, the young worker has turned to pubs.

She pointed out that pubs often have verandas, which is a “cool” and relaxed environment to work in.

“Pubs do have free WI-FI and they are a great way to meet people,” she said.

It is also the kind of place where people feel comfortable approaching you.”

On social media, she shared that a random man approached her while she was eating and working from a pub, and, while the conversation was more awkward than anything else, she was still happy for the social fix.

“I live for random social interactions that make life interesting,” she said.

Ultimately, she said that pubs are a great way to “interact with people” while working and there are “cute guys there”.

Sophia also discovered that hotel cafes are suitable for hanging out. People don’t mind if you “lounge” around for longer and those who are on holiday or away for work are a bit keener to chat.

So, has she had any luck so far? Nope.

“No, definitely not! But there have been interactions,” she said.
