Memorial service held for fallen Queensland firefighter Izabella Nash

A service has been held for a “dedicated and determined” firefighter who was killed battling a factory fire earlier this month.

A memorial service has been held for a Queensland firefighter killed while battling a factory blaze near Brisbane.

Izabella “Izzy” Nash, 46, died of her injuries the day after being pulled from the factory fire at Slacks Creek on May 2.

A colleague, Lia Drew, was also taken to hospital with serious burns.

The memorial at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena on Monday afternoon was attended by friends, family, colleagues, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) leadership, and senior politicians, including Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

Acting QFES Commissioner Mike Wassing addressed those gathered, describing Ms Nash as someone whose “desire and drive was clear to everyone who worked with her”.

Acting QFES Commissioner Mike Wassing said Ms Nash was someone new recruits could rely on.

“For those who knew her best, it‘s no surprise Izzy excelled at being a firefighter,” Mr Wassing said.

“She was particularly focused on mentoring and helping new recruits … she was someone they could rely on.

“Colleagues are remembering how much fun Izzy was to be around … entertaining others as she spoke of her four-wheel driving adventures or motorbike riding.”

She was an avid outdoor adventurer, four-wheel-driver and motorbike rider.

Station officer Fiona Rose also spoke of how she and Ms Nash formed a close bond due to their military backgrounds.

“She was extremely dedicated, determined and capable,” Ms Rose said.

“She always showed a willingness and respect to carry out any tasks with determination. We feel honoured to have played a part in the firefighting career she loved so much.”

Ms Nash’s partner Bec Weinert said Ms Nash was her ‘rock’.

Ms Nah’s partner Bec Weinert said Ms Nash was “passionate and driven in all that she did”.

“My life with Iz has been one full of life and packed with adventure,” Ms Weinert told those gathered.

“I miss that you are my rock … I will miss that you used to select a show on TV and fall asleep in minutes.

“You are my person, and I am yours … I am blessed for the time we did share, until we meet again.”

Wreaths were laid before Ms Nash’s helmet was formally presented to Ms Weinert and the Nash family.
