Gen Z are baffling Millennials at work with their chaotic work habits
Gen Z have developed some unusual workplace habits that are leaving Millennials feeling and a little bit threatened.
Gen Z are now in the workforce and are not playing by the Millennial, Gen X or boomer rules. Yes, it is time to feel old, confused and maybe slightly threatened.
Our youngest workers are going viral on TikTok for creating havoc in the workplace by being so bloody casual. They aren’t going viral on Instagram because Instagram is far too Millennial – this is a generation that doesn’t even know who MySpace Tom is.
So what is the generation doing that is so different? Well, they are signing off their emails like they are the main character and not just a lowly employee.
Forget signing with kindest, regards or best wishes. Gen Z has fun with their email farewells, and it has become absolute written chaos.
Instead, they are signing off with, ‘another day, another slay,’ ‘blessed up,’ and ‘slay, serve, survive!” Basically, they aren’t going for formal they are going for fun. One Gen Z icon signs off with, “Stay hydrated, Queens!” And, honestly, very good advice.
Gen Z are also going rogue on their out-of-office messages. Instead of the standard, “Hi, I’ll be away from 10th to 15th. Don’t hesitate to contact my co-worker for emergencies, and here’s my personal number.”
They’ve decided to mix it up, and it is as impressively silly as it is intimidating.
The newest generation is being playful instead of professional. One TikTok went viral, showcasing a few, one included, ‘On vacation. Hoping to win the lottery and never return.’ Another read, ‘the bad news is I’m out of the office, the good news is I’m out of the office.’ A particular favourite is, “ERROR 404: Employee not found.”
Gen Z isn’t just going rogue on their emails; they are also vetoing professional work attire. I mean, did you really think people that sign off emails with ‘pop off Queen’ are going to be wearing blazers and slacks into the workplace, no way!
I need Gen Z to understand that there was a time when we werenât allowed to wear jeans at work. Millennials died for that right in the Levi Jeans Massacre.

They are wearing crop tops, paired with all types of pants, everything from baggy jeans to corporate pants to shorts and they are on TikTok sharing their outfits as fashion inspiration and it is a far cry from boring.
I know, forget looking for the most boring blend in outfit possible. Gen Z are all about standing out at work and every moment has potential to be a fashion moment.
It is 2023 and it is a Gen Z world; the rest of us are just living in it. If you want to be seen as fun in the office I’d suggest throwing on a crop top and leaving professionalism in the early 2000s.
