Thousands take a digital snoop through Julia Gillard's former home

HAVE A PEEK: ONLINE views for Julia Gillard's recently listed former house have soared far above those normally seen in the area.

PUNTERS and stickybeaks have logged on in their thousands to check out the Altona former home of ex-prime minister Julia Gillard.

More than 5800 views had been recorded less than a week after the modest, by the standards of a former world leader, three-bedroom property was listed for sale on realestate.com.au.

The figure is eight times higher than the normal number for Altona properties.

And the public will have a chance to inspect the three-bedroom in person as it is opened to prospective buyers on Saturday and Sunday.

Anna Grech from Jas Stephens, Williamstown, is handling the sale and said with extensive online interest in the property already she anticipated a good sales campaign, with family buyers likely to take note.

"It's a lovely home, it really is," Ms Grech said.

Normally Ms Grech would expect to see between 20 and 30 people at an open for inspection at a similar property in the suburb, but this weekend's open for inspections could see much more foot traffic.

RP Data Victorian market expert Robert Larocca said the numbers likely reflected that the former PM had timed the sale well.

"It's a good time to sell in Altona," Mr Larocca said.

"Median house sale prices are up 4.3 per cent over the last year and 6 per cent per annum over the past 10 years. It's been a reasonably healthy property market for the last couple of years."

That 4.3 per cent improvement means a $545,000 median priced property there has grown $22,500 in the past twelve months, according to RP Data figures.

But Ms Grech believes the renovated property will achieve a higher sales price, expected to top $600,000.

The house is being advertised as a modern and memorable property with proximity to schools, Cherry Lake and the beach.

The first open for inspection will be held at the 9 Medford St, Altona, property this Saturday between 3.30pm and 4pm, followed by a further opening on Sunday between 12.45pm and 1.15pm.
