‘Misty-eyed’ Newtown Jets director lists country escape

A ‘misty-eyed’ Newtown Jets director has listed his country escape for sale for less than he bought it for in what’s been an emotional week.

49 Bulls Lane, Springside, has a $1.7m guide for an October 28 auction. It last traded for $2.2m.

Long-serving Newtown Jets director and benefactor Terry Rowney, who saw his team take out a spectacular grand final win last weekend, has just listed his country property on the outskirts of Orange.

“I think my head’s only just feeling better now. It’s been a pretty crazy week,” he said.

The Jets won 28 to 22 over the North Sydney Bears, a triumph for the 116-year old club which was ejected from the premiership in 1983.

The celebrations were only short-lived, however, as news broke that their former president, Barry Vining, suffered a heart attack while watching the game on Sunday and died at the age of 85.

But they’ve also enjoyed the tranquility the Springwater estate at 49 Bulls Lane.

Rowney, who grew up in Marrickville following the Jets, now owns a string of hotels and motels in country NSW, as well as a label-printing business and a large working farm near Orange.

In March 2022, Rowney and his wife Annie bought the just-listed Springwater estate at 49 Bulls Lane for $2.2m after falling in love with its tranquility.

It’s now listed with an attractive guide of $1.7m for an October 28 auction via David Medina of Sotheby’s.

“There’s something magical about it, I’ve just loved the time we’ve spent there,” Rowney said.

“I love getting up early in the morning and wandering out to the veranda with my dogs and looking out over the fields and thinking ‘Oh my God, how good is this?’ I’m a city slicker born and bred but there’s just something special about this place.”

Despite admitting he feels misty-eyed when discussing the sale of the Bulls Lane property, he said the couple had fallen for a landmark period home in the centre of Orange.

The contemporary Bulls Lane residence sits on 3.48ha of land.

It has a practical north-facing layout that puts the great outdoors in focus.

Now they will be calling historic Mena on Kite St their part-time country home, while the more modern Springwater homestead is back on the market.

“I’m an old -world person and I love the charm and history of Mena, and that’s what sold us,” he said.

“But we’re definitely not leaving Orange. It’s a beautiful place, and the local airport makes it so accessible.”
