‘Fierce competition’: Sydney home without roof sells for just under $1 million
A three-bedroom property in a sought-after Sydney suburb has sold for almost $1 million – even without a roof.
A three-bedroom house missing most of its roof has sold for $1 million in one of Sydney’s “most tightly held suburbs”.
The property, located at 51 Brisbane Road, St Johns Park, in the city’s west, was listed for four weeks before it sold at auction for $965,000 last month.
In photos shared on realestate.com.au, the property, located on a 625sq m block, appears to resemble a typical three-bedroom brick house from the outside.
However, a photo of the inside of the home shows a very different story – with the roof of the property almost entirely destroyed after it was ravaged by a fire earlier this year.
“It was a bit of a hazard,” Blaz Dejanovic, the director of Blaze Real Estate, told news.com.au of the roof, adding no open homes were held before the property went to auction.
Photos show the kitchen ceiling was completely obliterated, leaving the room fully exposed.
The kitchen bench was also left blanketed in debris, sections of the wall were damaged and parts of the kitchen cabinetry were destroyed.
“Look no further because these opportunities we don’t come across every day,” the listing reads.
“Offering endless possibilities and with some work, you can transform this property into the perfect family home or investment property.”
Mr Dejanovic said the fire broke out in the kitchen earlier this year in January.
“The tenant left the stove on and went to the shops and the stove caught alight. The house went ablaze quickly, according to its owners,” he told news.com.au.
Mr Dejanovic said the three-bedroom, one-bathroom house would have cost about $1 million if the roof was still intact.
“We got a lot of comments on the day of the auction saying it was lot of money.”
However, despite the price tag, there was “fierce competition” between the 15 registered buyers.
In the end, the winning buyer didn’t ask about what happened to the roof and simply wanted to purchase the land to knock down the property and rebuild.
The property attracted attention on social media, with one Reddit user labelling it “a renovators delight”.
“It’s got a lot of natural light!” another joked.
Another pointed out that the real estate described the property as a “blazing opportunity” in its listing.
However, Mr Dejanovic said the description was a reference to the agency’s name rather than the incident that damaged the property.
More Coverage
Mr Dejanovic said St Johns Park was a “very tightly held suburb”, with the real estate noting the property was the “only block of land on the market”.
“The lifespan of a landlord in the suburb tends to last for quite a long time,” he said. “There’s a strong Vietnamese demographic in the suburb coming from Cabramatta, and there’s a lot of owner occupiers.”
The median house price of a three-bedroom property in the area is $1.04 million.
