Penny Wong has bought a multimillion dollar home in one of Adelaide’s most desirable areas.

The Foreign Minister bought the 110-year-old house in a leafy suburb south of Adelaide for $3.4 million, NewsWire confirmed on Friday.

Nestled away on a large 1350 sqm block shrouded by extensive gardens, the house was described on its realestate.com.au listing as “an enchanting Gentleman’s Villa”.

It has been previously listed with a historic Rolls Royce parked in the driveway.

“Guests are ushered into the home via a broad and stately corridor, the soaring 3.69m ceiling heights signalling the grandeur which is to follow throughout,” the listing said.

Photos of the property show ornate ceilings, polished lighting fixtures and bay windows throughout the house, which is encircled by a wraparound balcony.

Senator Wong’s office told NewsWire she bought the property with her wife, Sophie Allouache.

“Minister Wong and her wife have purchased a new family home and are preparing to sell their current property, and that of the minister’s mother, who passed away earlier this year,” a spokesperson said.

News of the sale, which 2GB first reported, comes weeks after Anthony Albanese sparked controversy for buying a cliffside mansion on the NSW Central Coast.

The $4.3 million multi-story house in Copacabana boasts clear ocean views and even offers a peek of Sydney’s distant, towering CBD.

The Prime Minister bought the property with his fiancee, Jodie Haydon, who grew up in the area.

Mr Albanese said at the time that “when your relationship changes, your life changes”.

But critics took issue with the Prime Minister buying the lavish home during a cost-of-living crisis fuelled, in part, by soaring property prices across the country.

With polls predicting a tough fight ahead for the Albanese government in next year’s looming federal election, some of the harshest criticism of Mr Albanese’s home purchase has come from backgrounding Labor insiders.
