Melbourne Cup-winning horse owner Vin Sammartino saddles up to sell Kew trophy home
Building company boss and part-owner of three Melbourne Cup winners, Vin Sammartino, and wife Leigh Ferrier are bidding goodbye to their house with a basement cocktail bar.
Construction boss and horseracing bigwig Vin Sammartino and wife Leigh Ferrier have listed their trophy Kew house with a $15m-$16.5m price range.
In addition to his role as building company Hacer Group’s business development manager, Mr Sammartino is part of the syndicate behind thoroughbreds Almandin and Rekindling — who took home the 2016 and 2017 Melbourne Cups, respectively.

Other syndicate members include – or included – the late music industry giant Michael Gudinski, Quicksilver founder Alan Green, Rip Curl co-founder Brian Singer and chicken king Bob Ingham’s son, John Ingham.
Mr Sammartino also has a stake in 2020 Cup victor Twilight Payment.
It was revealed last month that Mr Sammartino and Ms Ferrier splurged more than $15m on an off-the-plan penthouse purchase in Camberwell’s Victoria Hill project.
The couple’s circa-1920s, six-bedroom house at 103 Sackville St, Kew, was recently renovated and extended.
Set on 2166sq m and named Colongulac, it features a basement home cinema, cocktail bar, wine cellar and powder room.
Outdoors there’s a tennis court, self-cleaning and heated 12m-long pool and spa, external shower and a Scandinavian-imported sauna.
The three-tier fountain and fish pond added to the relaxing atmosphere.
A terrace pavilion is equipped with a pizza oven, barbecue, gas cooktops, commercial rangehood, drinks fridge and a suspended fireplace.
Colongulac also boasts a lift, study, formal dining room, four-car garage and gym.
The Calacatta marble-fitted kitchen contains Miele appliances including a coffee machine, a Liebherr fridge and freezer, dishwashers and a wine fridge and ice machine in the butler’s pantry.
Upstairs there’s a parents’ retreat consisting of a bedroom opening to a terrace, a dressing room and ensuite with a freestanding bath.
Kay & Burton Boroondara’s Sam Wilkinson declined to comment on the owner, but public documents show the property is held in Ms Ferrier’s name.
Mr Wilkinson said the home’s entertaining set-up was one of the best he had ever seen.
“It is pretty hard to go past the cinema, bar and wine cellar downstairs,” he said.
“The design of the bar is very luxurious.”
