WANT to go all Mad Max? You can in rural Victoria where Mel Gibson's former retreat is up for sale.

At least four of the Aussie star's former properties have been put on the market this year.

The Lethal Weapon actor has spent the past two years selling off most of his worldwide portfolio, following a high-profile split with former wife Robyn Gibson.

But the lengthy process has dragged on so long that some of his former residences have begun returning to the market, even as Gibson continues trying to sell those he still owns.

The latest former home of the original Mad Max to be listed for sale is a rambling 390-hectare property in Victoria.

Springbank in the Kiewa Valley near Albury/Wodonga has views of the Australian Alps and was bought by Gibson in the late 1980s as a retreat to run cattle.

Gibson sold the four-bedroom home eight years ago for $1.85 million.

Current vendor, racehorse owner David Trevethan and wife, Christine, have $5.5 million-plus hopes for the farm.

Described by real estate agent Peter Hawkins as "the premier property of the local area", it can be traced back to the 1830s when it was part of the landmark Gundowring estate.

The listing is the first property owned, if only in the past, by Gibson to hit the market since his Malibu home was sold for about $9 million in October after spending two years on the market.

The Daily Mail reported the sale at the time and noted Gibson and wife Robyn bought the Spanish style compound for less than $3 million in 1989.

With six bedrooms and six bathrooms the monster home is among the last to sell of the Braveheart stars high profile portfolio.

The sale comes after a 15-bedroom mansion once owned by Gibson and wife Robyn was listed for sale in Connecticut in July this year.

The Tudor-style manor house in Greenwich was sold by Gibson two years ago for $23.2 million but its new owner is seeking a massive profit with hopes of just under $32 million, according to the Daily Mail.

Meanwhile in March this year Gibson's Costa Rica holiday home was re-listed for sale at just under $29 million, according to the Wall St Journal.
