The former prime minister's modest brick home in Melbourne's southwest is officially on the market after she decided to spend her post-political life in Adelaide.

Jas Stephens senior sales consultant Anna Grech said the three-bedroom home would be auctioned on December 14 and could sell for upwards of $600,000.

"But how can we put a price on her house ... there's a lot of history attached to it," Ms Grech said.

"There's a soul in that house, there's really something about it."

Ms Gillard bought the 1960s-style Medford St home for $140,000 in 1998, and renovated it in 2008, adding an extra room and a deck out the back.

"She loves the seaside suburb, she's moved now to a seaside suburb," Ms Grech said.

Ms Gillard bought a $2 million beachside bungalow in Adelaide to be closer to her mother, sister and new niece.

After she was toppled by Kevin Rudd earlier this year, Ms Gillard famously promised to be "the most meddlesome great aunt in Australia's history".

She was also appointed an honorary professor of politics at the University of Adelaide.

Inspections of the Medford St home will begin on November 23.
