Former Qantas chief Geoff Dixon and his wife, Dawn, have sold their stunning Darling Point residence with extraordinary harbour views for a huge price prior to auction.

Raine and Horne Double Bay sales agent Alex Lyons confirmed exclusively to the Wentworth Courier this afternoon that the two-level residence at 1/44 New Beach Road has sold for just over $11m.

“We had four people chasing it and it got to a level that the vendors were very happy to accept,” Lyons said.

The purchasers were a local family.

When first listed, the guide ahead of the scheduled May 6 auction had been $10m.

Is the property market too hot?

But that was soon lifted to $10m to $11m: there was immediate interest in the property — the harbour views, space (438 sqm internal) and finishes were all first class.

As Lyons said for the Wentworth Courier Apartment of the Week feature: “The space and finishes are unparalleled … in terms of apartment living, this is as good as it gets.”

Sadly, the artwork — including a range of Arthur Boyds, John Coburns and a portrait of Dixon by Paul Newton — will be going with the couple when they downsize.

The 70 people who came through the two open homes for the 438 sqm apartment, which has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and double garage parking, were all impressed with the quality apartment, which is one of just three in the Elandra development.

“It’s been incredible,” Lyons says.

“We’ve had a lot of expats through, professional couples and of course downsizers.”

It’s certainly an apartment that a lot of people would enjoy.

After waking up and doing some yoga stretches on the upper-level master suite’s terrace with a view of the Harbour Bridge, the weekends would be spent mainly on the downstairs terrace.

The terrace off the open-plan living area has the same view, framed by frangipani and the huge Moreton Bay fig trees across the road in Rushcutters Bay Park.

There’s an in-built Miele coffee machine in the kitchen, which also has stainless steel benches (which I love) and a large freestanding stone bench.

The gas fireplace is surrounded by marble and the residence is perfect for large-scale entertaining.

It also comes with airconditioning, a double garage and two separate storage areas.

The couple, who bought the three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment in Elandra in Dawn’s name for $8.65m in 2016 from Acme marketing director Victor Topper and his wife, Sandra, are now looking to downsize.

Dixon was in the top job at Qantas between 2001 and 2008 and was succeeded by the current CEO Alan Joyce. He was also on the Crown Resorts board between 2007 and 2019.

Lyons also sold the couple’s four-bedroom, three-bathroom escape with pool in Byunya Road, Palm Beach for $3.5m in 2018.

That was bought by Channel 10 Studio 10 presenter Jonathan Coleman and his wife, Margot.
