‘Out of touch’: Rita Ora’s travel confession divides

A popular star has struck the wrong chord after sharing something that has made people call her “out of touch”.

Rita Ora is 'over the moon' to be named host of the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards

Singer Rita Ora struck the wrong chord after joking about her decision to take a last-minute trip to Sydney in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis.

The 34-year-old posted on TikTok that last night, she’d “drunkenly” decided she wanted to come to Australia and was now in Sydney.

“P.O.V last night I drunkenly decided I wanted to come to Sydney in the morning,” she wrote.

The TikTok went down like a lead balloon on social media, with people quick to point out that it is privileged to be able to travel internationally at a second’s notice.

Aussies are feeling especially sensitive at the moment when it comes to finances.

The median national rental price has soared above $600, the median national house price is now $800,000, and according to financial comparison website Finder, a staggering 42 per cent of Aussies are living paycheck to paycheck.

So Ora’s cheeky post about her last-minute trip to Australia, which clearly was meant to be good-humoured, wasn’t well received.

“Rich flex,” one wrote.

“I can’t relate because I’m poor,” another noted.

“Rich privilege,” someone else claimed.

“No need to flex like this to the poor,” one complained.

“So out of touch,” another criticised.

Not everyone was offended by her last-minute trip. Others praised her travel decision and said, “Yes, Queen,” and “I love you.”

Ora has spent a fair bit of time in Australia in recent years because she was a judge for two seasons of the singing reality show competition The Voice.

She’s also married to New Zealand director Taika Waititi, who recently spent a lot of his time in Australia filming Marvel blockbusters. Ora credits Australia with helping her embrace a “healthy” lifestyle.

Ora has previously spoken to news.com.au and praised Aussies for knowing “how to party,” which she loves doing.

The pop singer went on to explain that she feels the most “free” when she’s in Australia and loves the laid-back lifestyle.

“I exercise, I know it’s boring … but Australia is where I discovered getting healthy. When I came to do The Voice, everyone was just on a really healthy thing. Now I’m obsessed with it,” she said.

She’s also gushed about how in Australia she’s always felt so “welcome”, considering she’s even been seen hanging out with Aussie celebs like Pip Edwards and Chris Hemsworth and his wife, Spanish model actor Elsa Pataky, and Aussie actor Isla Fisher.
