An analysis of lottery data has revealed the places in Australia where the most division one lottery wins were sold in the 11 months to November 30.

According to data crunched by The Lott and Lotterywest, the NSW south coast suburb of Dapto sold four division one winning entries, followed by the Queensland suburb of Nerang/Pacific Pines and the Victorian suburbs of Melbourne, Doreen/Mernda and Broadmeadows/Dallas, which each sold three division one winning entries.

The suburbs of Howrah in Tasmania, Mawson Lakes in SA and Coolalinga in the NT each sold two division one winning entries.

In the 11 months to November 30, there were 456 division one winning entries from all lottery games across Australia, delivering more than $1.32 billion in prize money.

NSW claimed honours for having the most division one wins with 122 delivering more than $450 million for the lucky winners.

The state was helped by one winner scoring the second-biggest individual prize in Australian history with a $100 million Powerball win in June.

In Victoria, 114 division one winners won $376.8 million, followed by 80 WA residents collecting $214 million.

Queensland posted 96 division one wins sharing with $163 million between them, while SA had 32 winners scoring a combined total of $67 million.

Tasmania’s nine winners won $53 million and the NT’s four division one winners shared $3 million.

Across Australia, a total of 340 overnight millionaires were created by division one wins, with NSW and the ACT scoring 106 newly minted millionaires.

Of the seven biggest wins for the year – which ranged from $1 million to $100 million, four tickets were sold online and three were bought at newsagencies.

The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said that anecdotal evidence suggests that the winners have employed different strategies in chasing a win.

“Some players tell us they deliberately pick outlets that have recently sold a major lottery prize in the hope of continuing the winning streak, while other players choose different outlets, believing lightning won’t strike twice,” Mr Hart said.
