Engadine man scores $1.2 million Saturday Lotto win on his birthday
A Sydney man who got the winning ticket for his birthday is the last of the five winners scooping up Division 1 in Saturday’s Lotto win to step forward.
A young man from Sydney’s south has received his “most rewarding birthday present yet” after the Saturday Lotto ticket he received as a birthday gift yielded him a division one prize of $1.2 million.
He was the last of five winners to claim his prize, with three winners from NSW and two from WA each winning a slice of the jackpot, taking home more than $1.2 million a piece.
“Thank you! It’s a pretty good feeling knowing I’m about to become a millionaire!” he laughed when he heard the news.
When asked how he planned to enjoy life as a newly-minted millionaire, the happy winner from Engadine declared he had his sights set on a new set of wheels.
“The first thing I am going to do is get myself a car that works!” he laughed. “Anything will be better than the bomb I’ve got now.
“I’ll use some to pay off some debts and then I’ll have a think about the rest!”
The winner received the ticket as part of a gift for his birthday from his dad and stepmum. “It’s the most rewarding birthday gift I’ve ever received!” he exclaimed.
His parents urged him to check the ticket when they heard there was a winner from Engadine. “They were pretty desperate to find out if they bought me the winning ticket!” he said.
“I planned to check it at the newsagency this morning, but I was thinking about it all night and couldn’t sleep.
“At about one o’clock this morning it got the better of me, and I checked it online, and that’s when I realised I had won!
“I haven’t slept a wink since but it’s a pretty good reason not to get any sleep!”

SYDNEY AIRPORT WORKER WINS BIG
A Sydney airport worker whose hours were cut due to COVID-19 was one of the other winners who scooped up $1.2 million in Saturday’s Lotto.
The winner didn’t know he had won until he was contacted by Lottery officials with the life-changing news.
“I had no idea. I hadn’t checked my ticket yet. I play every week, and I never thought I’d win that much. The most I’ve ever won is $1000,” he said.
The man from Bexley was overjoyed, telling Lottery officials, “This is really, really good news!
“I work at the airport, and since COVID-19 I’ve only been able to work one or two days a week, which has been hard,” he said.
He told the officials since having his hours cut back, he’s been struggling to pay his mortgage and said the win was “such a relief”.
“I’ll be able to pay off the mortgage and not have to stress about work while I wait for things to get back to normal.
“It’s so good!” he exclaimed.
He bought the ticket at his local newsagency in Bexley.
“This is the first time we’ve sold a division one winning entry since we took over the store in June 2019,” Bexley Newsagency owner Mohammad Rafiqul Islam said.
One of the other winners from NSW was a Cabramatta man who said he would use the prize money to accelerate his retirement plans and help his family get a leg-up.
“I’m nearly at the point of retiring, but I’m definitely going to retire now,” he said.
“I’m not sure exactly what I’ll do with my prize, but I know it will be a great feeling to be able to help my children buy a house.”
The other two winners from Saturday are from Western Australia.
