A mum’s genius hack for saving $5k has gone viral on TikTok
An Aussie mum has shared a clever hack for saving $5000 that’s gone viral on TikTok – and you can do it with items found around the house.
An Aussie mum was able to save more than $5000 with just a few things lying around the house.
Becky Turoczi used just a coin tin, an A4 sheet of paper, a black marker pen, a bit of sticky tape and some star stickers and shared her simple trick to boost savings on TikTok.
She wrote the numbers from 1 to 100 on the piece of paper with the black marker pen and wrapped the coin tin with it with some sticky tape.
Her hack is to pay yourself from $1 to $100 and all the numbers in between over a period of time until you have ticked off all the numbers.
Every time she puts the value of the number in the coin tin, she marks it off with a sticker. You could cross the numbers off instead if you don’t have the stickers.
By the time you’ve reached the last number, you’ll have $5,050.

“Here’s to saving,” she wrote with her post about her “money challenge”.
You can choose how frequently you deposit the cash, but Becky recommends at least every week if you want to save money fast.
You’ll need to deposit money twice a week to reach the value over a year – but if you do it every day you’ll achieve your goal in 100 days.
Thousands of TikTok users who saw the trick commented they wanted to to try it for themselves.

“This is amazing and I’m so glad to see it,” one person said.
“Love this!” another added.
The challenge is based on a formula discovered by 18th century German mathematician, Carl Friedrich Gauss who calculated that if you add up every number from 1 to 100 you get 5050.

The money-saving tricks isn’t the first of the kind to go viral.
Another mum, earlier this year, had a simple trick to save more than $5000 using a similar formula, but with envelopes instead.
It takes less than six months to collect $5000 with the “Envelope Challenge”.
The envelope challenge requires 100 paper envelopes each labelled from $1 to $100.
For 25 weeks, two envelopes are drawn at random each week and the corresponding amount slipped inside.
So if you pull out 50 and 1, you put in $50 and $1 in each of the envelopes.
After 25 weeks, you’ll have $5050 – and 100 envelopes to recycle.
