‘Just rude’: 30yo’s wild first date demand

A young Aussie has revealed the first date act that it is “just rude” and her plan to make men pay for their behaviour.

Maddy Carty has been dating for years, and at this point, she’s considering charging men a cancellation fee for bailing on a first date at the last minute.

The 30-year-old hosts Mad’s World, a comedy podcast about sexuality, dating, and love.

In a recent episode, one of her mates, Natalie, joined the podcast to discuss her financial feelings about dating.

Ms Carty explained that her friend believed if someone cancels a date within 24 hours you should be able to charge them for the inconvenience.

Natalie argued there needs to be a fee because women invest so much financially into getting ready for a date.

“I’ve exfoliated my tan, re-tanned, I’m doing all these little bits and bobs, like you’re cancelling on me that tan costs money,” she argued.

Ms Carty suggested men should have to pay a deposit before taking you on a date and only get it back if they show up; otherwise, they forfeit the amount.

Speaking with news.com.au Ms Carty said that she’d charge a $100 cancellation fee – if she could.

The 30-year-old explained that just getting ready for a first date costs her hundreds.

“If you add everything together, it could be like $300, and makeup and beauty products are expensive,” she said.

“You’ll make a plan with a guy only to be dumped at the last minute when he gets what he believes is a better option, and that is $300 down the drain,” she said.

Ms Carty said part of the problem is that getting cancelled on is becoming more “common” because people are constantly swiping and matching.

“Cancelling is becoming so much more common, because people wait for a better offer to arise,” she said.

“Social media and dating apps have made people always want the perfect option.”

Ms Carty claimed that people can also just be “disrespectful,” and often, men are ignorant of how much effort women put into getting ready for a first date.

“People can be lazy and disrespectful of other people’s time; cancelling on the day of a date unless you’re unwell or it’s a real emergency is just rude,” she argued.

Ms Carty, who lived in the UK for years, has previously spoken about the low-effort dating culture in Australia.

“Dating as a 30-year-old in Australia is so hard,” she said.

“Not only is the dating pool so small, because there are fewer people, I guess, but the amount of effort Australian guys put in is insane – it is just nothing,” she said.

Ms Carty said Aussie men message you for months but never ask you out or attempt to meet up, and being on dating apps can still mean you don’t go on any dates.

Instead of meeting a new guy, she has a new random Instagram follower who feels more like a fan than a potential love interest.

“There seems to be no effort from men to want to get to know you or ask you any questions. Women are entering into dating with genuine intentions to understand or get to know someone, whereas men treat a date like they’re a guest on Oprah, and I’m Oprah,” she told news.com.au.

“Across the board, men can be pretty disrespectful in how they approach dating. Dinners with my girlfriends have turned into swapping war stories of terrible dating experiences.”
