Aldi’s radical plan to transform all 555 stores, warehouses revealed

All Aldi stores and warehouses will be powered by renewable energy by 2021, spurred by a sustainability push.

Aldi has revealed it will power all of its stores and warehouses with 100 per cent renewable energy by the end of 2021.

The supermarket giant will be using offsite wind farms and onsite solar panels to power their 555 stores and eight distribution centres.

The move is Australia’s largest commercial on-site solar rollout to date.

By the end of this year, Aldi aims to have 250 Australian stores and six warehouses equipped with 102,000 solar panels.

The supermarket giant has secured 10-year power purchasing agreements with two large wind farms in New South Wales and Victoria which will provide renewable energy to all of its stores in those states.

The retailer has already reduced its overall operational emissions by 40 per cent since 2012.

Aldi’s internal data found 95 per cent of Australian shoppers want to be sustainable and believe businesses have a responsibility to help the environment.

Aldi’s move to renewable energy will prevent 41,000 tonnes of carbon emissions entering the atmosphere every year. This is the equivalent of taking 11,700 cars off the road annually or generating enough electricity to power 7000 average Australian homes.

Aldi was a first-mover in scrapping single-use plastic bags, moving ahead of Coles and Woolworths, and ahead of legal obligations.

“ALDI knows a bargain when it sees one,” Greenpeace Australia Pacific REenergise campaign director Lindsay Soutar said. “Renewable energy is the cheapest form of energy and is bringing down power bills across the country.

“ALDI has abundant roof space across its hundreds of stores and distribution centres. In a sun-soaked country like Australia, it just makes so much sense to use that space to generate clean and affordable power.”
