Westpac to refund $1.8 million to 30,000 credit card customers

Tens of thousands of Westpac customers are about to get a refund after the bank admitted to overcharging fees due to an “error”.

Westpac CEO calls on govt and regulators to stimulate growth

Westpac will refund $1.8 million to 30,000 customers who were incorrectly charged annual fees on their credit cards.

The bank says the refunds, which average about $60 per customer, come after a review process discovered the mistake where customers who should have had their fees waived for hitting spending targets were still charged.

“Westpac is committed to reviewing its products and services to ensure we are meeting the needs of our customers,” a spokeswoman said.

“As part of this review process, we are refunding around 30,000 customers who were incorrectly charged a fee on their Westpac 55 Day credit card.

“The mistake occurred when customers who were entitled to have their annual credit card fee waived based on their credit card spend were still charged the fee as the result of a system calculation error.

There is no need for our customers to do anything. We are contacting all impacted customers and will ensure no one is out of pocket as a result of this error. We apologise for the error and want to assure our customers this has been fixed.”

It comes a month after the bank was forced to refund tens of millions of dollars to 40,000 mortgage customers who were incorrectly charged excess interest.
