ONE of the broadest class actions in Australian history will be lodged against major banks and institutions over credit card late fees imposed on their customers.

Compensation law firm Maurice Blackburn is expected to lodge the action on Tuesday on behalf of hundreds of thousands of bank customers.

The action against ANZ, Citibank and Westpac will be filed in the NSW Supreme Court, with more against NAB, American Express and the Commonwealth Bank expected to follow, Fairfax reports.

The action, likely to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, will include all customers who have been hit by late fees from the institutions.
