Super Bowl 2021: This year’s best ads featuring Timothee Chalamet, Dan Levy and Cardi B
Amy Schumer donned her fairy wings for a commercial with food brand Hellman’s, but there was a wild condition attached to her appearance.
Timothee Chalamet stars as Edward Scissorhands’ son in what is arguably the standout Super Bowl commercial from 2021.
One of the most anticipated parts of the Super Bowl, aside from the Halftime Show, are the hilarious commercials and this year there are plenty of celebrities taking part.
This year’s commercials feature John Travolta, Cardi B, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Jason Alexander and Matthew McConaughey to name just a few.
Comedian Amy Schumer also appeared as a winged angel for mayonnaise brand Hellman’s but there was a groundbreaking condition attached to her appearance.

SAMUEL L. JACKSON
It’s a CGI version of the actor in a spot for internet company Verizon, which sees him eaten by a massive shark ridden by football player Juju Smith-Schuster. During the ad, Jackson taunts players in avatar form for blaming lagging internet for their video game losses.
MAYA RUDOLPH
The actress who has appeared in everything from Bridesmaids to The Good Place plays a number of different characters in a promo for financial services company Klarna as it looks to further target the US market.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
The rock legend, known as The Boss, appeared in this unusual Super Bowl ad for Jeep. Bruce Springsteen’s own 1980 Jeep CJ-5 also features in the commercial, which focuses on common ground, connection and bridging the political divide. “It’s no secret the middle has been a hard place to get to lately,” he narrates. “We need the middle. We just have to remember the very soil we stand on is common ground so we can get there.”
SERENA WILLAMS
A line up of celebrity athletes feature in an ad called Happy for light beer brand Michelob Ultra’s. It shows tennis player Serena Williams at her Florida home having a karaoke party singing along to the likes of Cardi B, with a bunch of friends. Other famous faces in the commercial include Peyton Manning, former American football quarterback, basketballer Anthony Davis and soccer player Alex Morgan.
ROBINHOOD
The trading app for amateurs has been hit with a wall of controversy after it halted buying and selling of GameStop shares, but its first ad is trying to woo more users. It included the message: “You don’t need to become an investor. You were born one.”
It’s been hitting the headlines a lot lately after its user sent the share market crazy and while the company couldn’t afford a full ad and did air five second ads across key states where it talks about the Reddit Rebellion.“Big game spots are expensive, so we couldn’t buy a full one,” the company announced in a blog post. “But we were inspired and decided to spend our entire marketing budget on 5 seconds of airtime. One thing we learned from our communities last week is that underdogs can accomplish just about anything when they come together around a common idea.”
The blink and you miss it commercial was shown in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington DC.

HUGGIES
A tearjerker from the well known nappy brand as it features babies born on game day. It’s the first nappy brand to nab a Super Bowl ad spot, despite US birth rates in the biggest decline since the Great Recession. But it hit the spot on social media with users describing the commercial as “adorable”.
“What a brilliant campaign idea by @Huggies they are welcoming babies born today on their social feed and including them in their ad,” tweeted one user.
AMY SCHUMER
The comedian is transformed into the ‘Fairy Godmayo’, complete with golden wings, for food brand Hellman’s to inspire people to waste less food at home. It shows Schumer stepping into a refrigerator filled with jars of mayonnaise before her angel wings unfurl. It’s reported that part of her contract for the commercial was a groundbreaking clause that stated that Hellman’s make their best efforts to avoid placing the ad near any hate or disinformation online or off.
TOYOTA
Featuring Paralympic swimmer Jessica Long, the car manufacturer’s ad is being heavily praised on social media, with many admitting the commercial brought them to tears.
Long was adopted by an American couple from a Russian orphanage. The ad depicts a phone call where is it revealed Long needs to have her legs amputated due to a rare condition called fibular hemimelia, which means she didn’t have any ankles, heels, fibulas and other bones in her feet. But it ends on a high note with the line: “We believe there is hope and strength in all of us.”
“Oh @Toyota you guys made me cry during #SuperBowlLV thanks for that amazing adoption message,” wrote one man.
“Winner of “Tightest Tug on my Heartstrings” is @Toyota‘s Olympics spot,” one man said.
“Omg the Toyota commercial with the swimmer gave me chills,” wrote one woman.
“@JessicaLong if there were #superbowlad medals that’s a gold for sure!” wrote another user.
JASON ALEXANDER
Seinfield star Jason Alexander has his face blown up on a hoodie to promote a brand of detergent called Tide, which is made by Procter & Gamble. The ad shows the teenage owner of the hoodie, who doesn’t look after it very well, as it suffers dog drool, dirty gym socks and is even sat on. It ends with Alexander spotting the kid in the hoodie and demanding he stop wearing his face.
DRAKE AND PAUL RUDD
Superstar rapper Drake joins Paul Rudd in a commercial for insurance company State Farm. Drake is a cast as a stand-in for the brand’s trademark spokesman. But when he tries to talk in the ad, he is shot down and told he doesn’t have any lines.
JOHN CENA AND $1 MILLION BOUNTY
Mountain Dew is offering up a $1 million prize for the person who can tweet the exact number of major melon bottles in their ad. They have used American professional wrestler John Cena in the ad and ask if you can count as well as him.

US Hamilton star and actor and musician Daveed Diggs raps with Sesame Street biggest name in a commercial for delivery service, DoorDash. Working with Big Bird, Deeds highlights the company’s initiative to donate up to $1 for each order placed — in total up to $1 million — Sesame Workshop’s child-focused social impact work.
LIL NAS X
The rapper has his new song ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name) featured in consumer tech company Logitech’s first ever Super Bowl ad. It’s the second year in a row the breakout musician has appeared in a Super Bowl spot after the Doritos ad last year — a rarity for someone only three years into their mainstream career. Despite the tease for his new song, there is no release date for it yet.
WILL FERRELL, KENAN THOMPSON, AND AWKWAFINA
In this General Motors commercial, Ferrell, SNL star Kenan Thompson and Awkwafina join forces to promote the latest electric car model.
The trio attempt to travel all the way to Norway but Ferrell ends up in Sweden and the other two end up in Finland.
TIMOTHEE CHALAMET AND WINONA RYDER
Edward Scissorhands was one of the most memorable characters from the 1990s.
The lead character was played by Johnny Depp, but he is nowhere to be seen in this Super Bowl commercial.
Winona Ryder - who was just 19 when she appeared in the 1991 film - returns as Kim in the ad. Chalamet plays Edgar - Edward and Kim’s son.
The commercial advertises the Cadillac LYRIQ, as it shows Edgar attempting to live life with his unfortunate scissor hands.
DAN LEVY
Dan Levy, best known for the Emmy-winning sitcom Schitt’s Creek, makes a cameo in this M&M’s commercial that is all about using the popular chocolates to apologise.
JOHN AND ELLA TRAVOLTA WITH MARTHA STEWART
Scotts & Miracle-Gro employed the help of four big celebrities to promote their lawn care products.
The commercial highlights how Americans are spending a lot of time in their backyards due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdowns.
The celebs are shown getting up to a variety of activities in their backyards, including Travolta and his daughter recreating one of his iconic dances for TikTok.
MIKE MYERS AND DANA CARVEY WITH CARDI B
Myers and Carvey reunite 28 years after the release of their movie, Wayne’s World, to reprise their roles as Wayne and Garth.
In a commercial for Uber Eats, Wayne’s World uses Cardi B’s celebrity status to promote ordering from local restaurants.
The trio then switches styles with Wayne and Garth dressing like Cardi and the rapper donning their uniforms. As a treat, they sing together as well.
MILA KUNIS, ASHTON KUTCHER AND SHAGGY
Kutcher and Kunis show off their singing skills (or lack thereof) as they perform their own rendition of It Wasn’t Me by Shaggy, with the rapper himself also chiming in.
For this Cheetos commercial, Kunis steals Kutcher’s Cheetos but denies it despite being caught red-handed (literally).
DOLLY PARTON
Dolly Parton gives her famous 9 to 5 song an update to help promote Squarespace, a website-building platform.
Parton changes the lyrics to 5 to 9 to promote working on your side-hustle after your normal work hours.
Though she’s not the main star of the commercial, Parton does appear on a magazine cover and winks at the actors.
NICK JONAS
Nick Jonas joins forces with Dexcom to help promote the latest way to monitor blood sugar levels.
Jonas, who has always been very open about his battle with diabetes, even gives fans a preview of what he would look like as an old man
MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY, JIMMY KIMMEL, AND MINDY KALING
McConaughey plays a cardboard version of himself who talks about how he no longer feels like himself before he climbs into a vending machine selling Doritos 3D chips and goes back to his regular self.
Mindy Kaling also joins him as they do an interview with talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.
MICHAEL B. JORDAN
An Amazon engineer daydreams that Michael B. Jordan becomes a human version of Alexa who performs a series of tasks around her house.
At one stage the Creed actor, in character as Alexa, even takes off his shirt, much to the dismay of the engineer’s husband.
