Let’s be honest, politics is often a snooze-fest. But pull back the curtain of any political campaign and it’s a whole different story.

HBO Max has given viewers a first look at its new comedy-drama, The Girls On The Bus, which follows four female journalists who join the US presidential campaign trail on board a bus travelling around the country.

Twenty-six cities in 14 states in 5 days - what could go wrong? Plenty.

“Here we are. Four political reporters, rivals, vicious competitors getting entirely out of control. Why? Because the state of American politics is the state of our own lives,” says protagonist and narrator Sadie McCarthy, played by Supergirl star Melissa Benoist.

Each of the women have different outlooks, reporting styles and personalities. While they start off as each other’s biggest competitors, soon they find common ground and form firm friendships as they report on the race for the White House.

Scandal star Scott Foley also stars in the series, playing a small-town mayor from Kansas who joins the presidential race. The cast is rounded off by Brandon Scott, Griffin Dunne and Mark Consuelos.

The series about strong female friendships, romance and intrigue is inspired by chapter in the 2018 book Chasing Hillary – a memoir by real-life political reporter Amy Chozick who chronicled her eight years spent covering the campaign of then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Chozick is co-creator of The Girls On The Bus alongside Julie Plec.

“Women had sort of taken over the boys on the bus, and we became this found family,” Chozick recently told Entertainment Weekly about her time on the campaign trail.

“You become friends with people you never would normally because you’re thrust together. It’s almost like a band on the road.”

The Girls On The Bus premieres Thursday, March 14 on BINGE and on Sunday, March 17 on Showcase at 8.30pm and available On Demand
