The Crown viewer’s letter lists one ’criminal’ problem with show

One seriously angry The Crown viewer penned a letter declaring the moment the show lost all credibility – and it’s not what you’d think.

With each new season of The Crown come the predictable complaints from some fans.

Does Olivia Colman’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth match up to Claire Foy’s? Why didn’t the show cover Princess Anne’s attempted kidnapping, one of the most dramatic events ever to happen to the royals? And this year: has the magnetic Gillian Anderson made fearsome Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher too sympathetic a character?

But here’s a new one. A self-confessed “staunch royalist” wrote into The Times newspaper in the UK to confess he and his wife had only decided to watch season four of The Crown “to pick away at its inaccuracies and untruths.”

And Surrey resident Dominic Witherow did not like what he saw, writing that he was unprepared for the “depth of injustice” in The Crown’s portrayal of Prince Charles.

Witherow’s ire was raised by season four’s first episode, which, among other things, shows Charles and friends on a fishing expedition in Iceland.

A pretty uncontroversial scene, you’d think.

“The show’s portrayal of his fishing technique was utterly unjustifiable,” he writes of the scene.

“To imagine that any self-respecting fisherman would allow his line to touch down so catastrophically is bad enough, but to then suggest that such a cast could possibly result in the landing of a fine salmon is tantamount to gross – almost criminal – negligence.

“Never has a television series managed to lose all credibility with such aplomb.”
