The Bear season 3 cops mixed reviews as all episodes hit streaming

It’s one of the most critically-acclaimed shows on streaming, but many reviewers have been left wanting over the new season of The Bear.

Fans have been treated to a third course of FX’s buzziest show The Bear, but not everyone is satisfied.

Season three of the Jeremy Allen White fronted cooking series dropped on Disney+ this week, with all 10 episodes hitting the streamer at once.

Following the overwhelming success of the first two seasons, the first of which swept this year’s strike-delayed Emmys in the comedy category, expectations were at boiling point for its much-anticipated third outing.

But it appears reviews among viewers and critics are divided, with the show dipping in favourability on Rotten Tomatoes compared to seasons one and two, which received 100 per cent and 99 per cent positive critical reviews, respectively.

In comparison, the new season has so far generated a 94 per cent score from reviewers: Still a very high score, but the reviews published so far haven’t exactly been glowing.

IndieWire dubbed it “good but not great”, while Variety wrote the series was “aimless” and relied too heavily on “star power”, taking a “step down” from its previous near-perfect series.

The Hollywood Reporter said that the new season “really is just wheel-spinning and dragging things out.”

Elsewhere, Collider described the storyline as “undercooked and underseasoned”, saying the show had become “rudderless and without a driving force.”

Vanity Fair stated that the show “does not, after three seasons, seem to be building to much of anything,” while The Independent said that the “frenetic drama feels stuck in a loop of its own creation.”

The Telegraph offered a more balanced review, noting season 3 “played it safe” but argued the show was still “television of the highest order”, while Empire declared it was “still the best table in town”.

Meanwhile, fans aired their thoughts on social media where opinions are, again, fairly mixed.

“I’m very disappointed in season 3 of #TheBear,” one wrote. “I thought the focus would be on the kitchen and the team and it felt like it was about retconning Claire, giving us more Faks, getting guest stars surprises, and making me actively hate Carmy.”

“Finished the bear season 3 and. this was underwhelming,” another said.

A third argued she still enjoyed the show, but felt it was hard to measure up to the brilliance of the first two seasons.

“I don’t think s3 is awful? like its very much still great television. it’s just that the bear has set a standard for itself so to see it fall flat of that standard is disappointing. that said, there are certain scenes in season 3 that have moved me more than anything out this year,” they wrote.

A fourth added, “The Bear 3. Enjoying it so far. Good show.”

They continued, “Doesn’t feel all that different to season 1 and 2 to me. I don’t see this giant quality drop people are seeing.”

The new season picks up with White’s Chef Carmy, Chef Syd (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they battle the highs and lows of building a restaurant business into something greater.
