Kevin Costner’s time on Yellowstone isn’t over just yet. The star –who announced he would not be reprising his role as patriarch John Dutton for the final instalment of the wildly popular drama due to scheduling conflicts — narrates the sweeping four-part docuseries, Yellowstone One Fifty, about the magnificent Yellowstone National Park for Paramount+.

Costner’s documentary comes as fans mourn the impending conclusion to Yellowstone, a show that has already spawned two prequels, 1883 and 1923, as well as an upcoming sequel.

“I gave this thing five seasons,” Costner said of controversially departing Taylor Sheridan’s drama series midway through season five. “I was really happy to do it. And I don’t need drama. So, let’s just take that drama away, let’s take the guessing [away].”

Fans will have to wait until November to find out how Costner’s beloved character will depart the series.

Before the Yellowstone franchise expands further, there’s plenty of award-winning drama to keep you engrossed on Paramount+. Also, from Sheridan’s arsenal of top-shelf drama is Special Ops: Lioness starring Nicole Kidman. The Gilded Age sees Emmy-nominated actors Carrie Coon and Christine Baranski trading barbs over tea, the sweeping saga Fellow Traveller’s showcases a secret love between two men and Frasier is back with some familiar faces and fun.

Apart from the award-winning Yellowstone, Kevin Costner’s passion for America’s frontier country has been showcased in films such Dances with Wolves and Horizon: An American Saga. Now, in four episodes, Costner retraces the steps of American geologist Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, whose 1871 expedition resulted in the creation of Yellowstone, the world’s first national park.

“This was a time in America when all people cared about was what they could extract from the land, what they could get out of it,” Costner explained in the premiere episode. “But these pioneers, they came up with an entirely new idea — a new way of finding value in the land. I want to see what they saw. I want to see what changed them.”

Special Ops: Lioness

Nicole Kidman leapt at the opportunity to become part of one of Taylor Sheridan’s worlds. “I loved [Yellowstone]. Loved it, watched it, ate it up but [I] was a huge fan of Taylor’s film work in terms of Sicario, Hell or High Water and so it was really exciting when he said, ‘I really want to do this with you as a producer.’ And then he said, ‘I can write you something that will be a supporting role... but you’ll be pivotal.” In this high-stakes espionage drama inspired by a real-life CIA program, Kidman plays a high-ranking official overseeing a mission that sees a rookie infiltrate a terrorist organisation. Production on the second season is already underway, with Kidman, Zoe Saldana and Morgan Freeman all reprising their roles. While Kidman has relished playing a CIA bigwig, the flame-haired Aussie believed she wears her heart on her sleeve too much to be any good at spy work in real life. “I’d be pretty crap at it,” she laughed.

These days, the actor’s face is still getting attention but for very different reasons. The star was forced to deny plastic surgery when fans reacted to an Instagram post saying she looked “unrecognisable” from her heyday on Party of Five and Ghost Whisperer. A period drama staring Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon is definitely not to be missed. Image: Paramount+

Christine Baranski and Carrie Coon are both nominated for Emmy Awards for their performances as feuding high society neighbours in 1800s New York. Created by Julian Fellows, the man behind Downton Abbey, it explores the tension between the blue-blooded Agnes (Baranski) and the newly moneyed Bertha (Coon). Since her break-out role on the 1990s sitcom Cybil, Baranski has carved out a niche playing strong, glamourous women in everything from The Good Wife to the Mamma Mia! musicals. Recently, Baranski joked to Vogue that the pinnacle of her career would be to make a third Mamma Mia! film -- only with a twist. Instead of working from a script, Baranski envisaged the producer “put us all up on a beautiful Greek island so we can all drink wine, reminisce on all of our experiences making the Mamma Mia! movies, and sing those fabulous ABBA songs. It would be like a filmed dinner banquet!”

For seven seasons, Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her band of misfit classmates battled the dramas of high school by day and the forces of evil by night in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But Charisma Carpenter’s 2021 revelations about series creator Joss Whedon revealed that the cast of young actors were navigating much darker forces behind the scenes than they ever did on screen. Carpenter, who played the snobby Cordelia in both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel, accused Whedon of pitting actors against one another and playing favourites to create a toxic workplace environment. Her remarks were supported by many of her co-stars including Gellar who has since said she hopes Whedon’s actions don’t damage the show’s legacy. For her part, Gellar has said in a recent YouTube interview that she was wrongly labelled a diva because of her strong work ethic.

X-Files fans will find everything they need on Paramount Plus. Image: Paramount Plus.

There was also tension on the set of The X Files on occasion with its star Gillian Anderson telling the Guardian in 2015 that there were “definitely periods” where she and co-star David Duchovny hated each other. “Hate is too strong a word. We didn’t talk for long periods of time. It was intense, and we were both pains in the a*** for the other at various times.” And yet, she remains good friends with the Californication star and Duchovny was the first person on The X Files set she told she was pregnant. Often when an actress gets pregnant in a major TV drama (and it can’t be written into the script) she will spend a season in inexplicably large jumpers, holding bags over her mid-section or standing behind things. In the case of The X Files, things got a little more creative, and Anderson’s character Dana Scully was instead abducted by aliens for several episodes. That was just one of the many bizarre plot twists that kept viewers on the edge of their seats for nine years and another two when it was later rebooted.

You’ve heard of trainwreck TV, well in Top Gear Australia you occasionally get car crash TV (only here it’s always a good thing rather than something to make you cringe). The series, which is based on the popular UK format, sees reality TV veterans Beau Ryan and Jonathon LaPaglia -- along with Blair Joscelyne -- jump into the driver’s seat to test drive a variety of vehicles and talk about all things motoring. Fans of the show will attest that its success ultimately relies on the chemistry and banter of its hosts. After all, it was the un-PC antics of Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond which made the show a hit in the first place and likewise made its reboot (following Clarkson and co’s controversial exit) a flop. Thankfully, Ryan, LaPaglia and Joscelyne have the passion and the penchant for a bit of naughtiness, to make this Aussie version a winner.

Although they couldn’t be more different in terms of tone and subject matter, both the Oscar nominated Tar starring Cate Blanchett and the new special South Park: The End of the Obesity examine issues that are ripped from the headlines. In the case of Tar, it follows a celebrated entertainment figure who uses their power and their fame to bully and abuse those who work under them. From Harvey Weinstein to Kevin Spacey, we have unfortunately seen this scenario play out a lot in recent years. What sets Tar apart –and raised eyebrows in some quarters – was the fact the predator was a woman rather than a man. Blanchett plays the formidably frightening Lydia Tar, an orchestra conductor whose career and mental health unravel when outed as an abuser. The Aussie actress won the AACTA, the Critic’s Choice, BAFTA and the Golden Globe for her performance.
