Love Is In The Air: Wild reaction to Netflix’s new Delta Goodrem film

“A saccharine mess”: Critics may have been scathing, but audiences feel very differently about Netflix’s new Aussie rom-com.

Love may be up in the air, but there’s no doubt that Netflix’s latest Aussie romantic comedy is a confirmed global hit.

Delta Goodrem’s return to acting in Love Is In The Air has proven a major success, currently ranking as the second-most popular film on the streaming service globally, and attracting a whopping 11.7 million viewers in its first week.

It joins other Aussie productions including Fisk, Run Rabbit Run, Wellmania and Heartbreak High in climbing up the international Netflix charts recently.

Love Is In The Air – shot in picturesque Far North Queensland – tells the story of dedicated pilot Dana Randall (Goodrem), who is fighting to save her family business, Fullerton Airways.

Dana, along with her dad, Jeff (Roy Billing), and mechanic best friend, Nikki (Steph Tisdell), work together to provide private tours but also essential services for the local island communities in the region – a business which unfortunately isn’t overly profitable.

William Mitchell (played by British actor and Kylie Minogue’s ex-fiance, Joshua Sasse) is sent all the way from London by his father’s investment firm to inspect the business’ financials and shut them down – but can’t bring himself to tell the truth about his visit to Dana.

The reason? Well, he’s falling in love with her, of course.

While film critics have been less than glowing in their reviews – The Guardian described it as a “saccharine mess” in their one-star write-up – it seems Netflix audiences feel very differently (or don’t mind a bit of excessive sweetness in their rom-coms).

Love Is In The Air is Goodrem’s first acting role since she played Olivia Newton-John in Seven’s 2018 miniseries based on the iconic performer’s life.

Her last starring role in a film was in 2005 Australian production Hating Alison Ashley.

Love Is In The Air was written and directed by Adrian Powers, co-written by Caera Bradshaw and Katharine E. McPhee, and produced by Steve Jaggi, Kelly Son Hing and Kylie Pascoe.

The film is now available to stream on Netflix.
