HBO has released a tongue-in-cheek statement in response to the huge blunder that appeared in the most recent episode of Game of Thrones.
Social media erupted when eagle-eyed fans spotted a takeaway coffee cup sitting on a table in one of the scenes.
I cannot get over how the makers of #GameOfThrones put fans on blast for not having expensive enough TVs to fully appreciate their visually perfect show then this week thereâs actually enough light to see the screen and their sloppy asses fully left a 2019 coffee cup in the shot. pic.twitter.com/gzUjhkn9xY

The staggering error went viral almost immediately and HBO responded by releasing a statement that said: “In response to inquiries from those who saw a craft services coffee cup in Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones, HBO states, ‘The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.’”
Fans of the show were gobsmacked that somehow, with the millions of dollars poured into every episode and the hundreds of eyes working on this huge production, someone left a modern-day takeaway coffee cup in the scene. And no one spotted it. Oops.

And no one spotted it again during the post-production process either. Not the editors or the colourists or the person who uploaded the episode to HBO’s servers. Double oops.
Perhaps the mistake slipped through because the two Game of Thrones showrunners weren’t paying as much attention as they usually do.
It’s been revealed that rather than watching from behind the camera, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss decided to chuck on costumes and appear as extras in the scene in question.
OH MY GOD, the showrunners were literally in the same scene as the Starbucks cup. pic.twitter.com/TS7wNPUCDf

Game of Thrones art director Hauke Richter downplayed the blunder in an email to Variety.
“Things can get forgotten on set,” he told the website. He added the coffee cup error had been “blown out of proportion (because) it has not happened with Thrones so far”.
That’s not entirely true though with fans having spotted a truck in a previous episode of the fantasy drama.

To be fair to Emilia Clarke, who was the actor closet to the rogue cup, we all know the Game of Thrones filming schedule was brutal for the actors with really long, cold days the norm.
She probably needed a little pick-me-up from the catering truck. Although, given her English roots, it’s probably strong black tea.
Game of Thrones is hardly the first historical period production to feature an anachronism.
Gladiator had a chariot powered by a gas cylinder (visible when it flipped over) while you can see a car in the background of a shot in Braveheart.
Game of Thrones is on Foxtel and Foxtel Now on Mondays at 11am and 8.30pm
