The Kid Laroi’s meteoric rise to fame from the humble suburb of Waterloo to the world stage is as impressive as they come.

It may appear the Aussie singer became a global pop sensation overnight, thanks to his smash hit Stay, which features Justin Bieber and reached number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. But the kid from the wrong side of town worked hard for his spot on the global stage.

A new Prime Video documentary, titled Kids Are Growing Up: A Story About A Kid Named Laroi, will track Laroi’s beginnings as an unknown musician in his Sydney hometown, where he was inspired by the likes of Tupac, Lil Wayne and Kanye West.

However, soon enough, Laroi’s music caught the attention of his peers, particularly Bieber who approached him on Instagram with a massive compliment.

“You got the sauce,” Bieber’s message read. Soon after in 2021, Laroi signed a global deal with Sony Music.

“Nobody would believe where I was only three years ago,” the 20-year-old says in the trailer for his upcoming documentary, released on Prime Video on February 29.

“I always wanted to do the hometown hero [thing]. [But] it feels like so much pressure and that gets in my head a lot, thinking that maybe one day I could just not have it. I’m just really anxious.”

It doesn’t look like Laroi is going anywhere anytime soon. He sold out his hometown arena during his recent tour Down Under, and in his almost four years in Hollywood – he moved there in 2020 – he has collaborated with the likes of Juice Wrld, Machine Gun Kelly and Post Malone, who only has praise for the young star.

He was also nominated for Best New Artist at the 2022 Grammy Awards.

“Laroi is so ambitious,” Malone, who worked with Laroi on the 2022 hit Wasting Angels, says in the doco. “I could tell he was going to be huge.”

Friend and mentor Justin Bieber also features in the doco.

The intimate documentary will also look at the man behind the music who, like everyone else, has ups and downs.

“Oftentimes, I don’t realise the impact you can make as a musician. It makes me keep going knowing that there’s people out there that might need that,” he says on camera.

Elsewhere in the trailer, Laroi promises the doco will give an insight into his life like never before.

“As much as people are going to learn a lot about me through this documentary, I think people will learn a lot more if they pay attention to the music,” he says.
