Ryan Gosling has broken into fits of laughter during a hilarious live TV skit, prompting his cast mates to also break character.

The Oscar-nominated actor hosted Saturday Night Live! over the weekend, where he participated in a sketch based on the popular cartoon series, Beavis and Butt-head.

Gosling dressed as Beavis for the bit, in which he donned an outrageous blonde wig, prosthetic nose and blue Death Rock T-shirt.

He portrayed an audience member during a mock segment for broadcaster NewsNation about artificial intelligence, which saw comedian Heidi Gardner play network host Bobbi Moore, as she interviewed AI “expert” Norman Henning, played by actor Kenan Thompson.

“There is a gentleman in your audience who looks strikingly similar to Beavis from the cartoon ‘Beavis and Butt-Head.’ Just a little distracting,” Thompson told Gardner.

Gardner clearly hadn’t seen Gosling in full costume during rehearsals, and struggled to maintain composure when she turned around:

Gosling was then asked to move so they could continue the interview, before actor Mikey Day sat in his place dressed as Butt-head.

This sent Gardner into a fit of hysterics, as the actress struggled to continue with her lines:

Afterwards, Gosling and Day sat side-by-side as they claimed they didn’t realise they held striking resemblances to Beavis and Butt-head.

But the Barbie actor barely managed to get words out – breaking into fits of giggles each time he looked at Day.

Gosling’s turn at hosting the iconic US show has been praised by critics and fans, and marked his third time in the hot seat.

During his opening monologue, The Fall Guy star delighted viewers by performing a Ken-inspired song – following his headline-making Oscars set.

“Ken and I, we had to break up. Letting go feels like a break-up,” Gosling said.

“For processing a break-up there’s really only one thing that can help: the music of the great Taylor Swift.”

Emily Blunt interrupted Gosling's opening monologue.

He then sat down at a piano and sang his own rendition of Swift’s iconic break-up anthem, All Too Well.

One of the highlight lyrics? I left my rollerblades in that big pink house / But I still got that fur coat and I’ll wear it right now.

Gosling was then interrupted by his The Fall Guy co-star Emily Blunt.

“Ryan, you have to move on. It’s time,” Blunt said to him. “Ken is dead.”
