Worrying challenge result for Block contestants Sharon and Ankur
Sharon and Ankur are hating their time on The Block – and their wild performance in Tuesday’s challenge doesn’t bode well for the weeks ahead.
Block underdogs Sharon and Ankur suffered another blow during Tuesday’s episode of the show, when they were the only contestants not to complete the latest challenge.
It led to a humiliating absence when judge Shaynna Blaze made a special appearance to inspect the teams’ work – and called them out for not bothering to turn up.
Each team had been given the task of making their own bespoke letterbox for their house, using materials collected from a nearby vintage bric a brac store.
The Block didn’t make it too hard on contestants, providing a finished Colorbond roof for each letterbox and specifying that the couples didn’t have to build from scratch – they could find anything letterbox-shaped at the store and simply embellish it during the full-day challenge.
But without their team of builders and tradespeople, Ankur and Sharon – by their own admission, the least experienced team this year – floundered.
“We don’t know what we’re doing,” Sharon admitted, as cameras caught her instructing her husband to screw holes into the letterbox. “I don’t know how to do it,” he told her.
“It’s crap, it’s crap – but what can you do?” Sharon asked. (A DIY course, presumably.)
One by one, the other teams finished, carrying their completed letterboxes off to be judged.
“All we had was a poorly painted white box,” Sharon said.
The couple then decided they’d rather be spared the embarrassment of showing their efforts and that it was better to stay behind and try to create something usable for their house.
And try they did, as the crew were shown sweeping and packing up while the couple still tried to finish.
Over at the judging, their absence did not go unnoticed, with Blaze and host Scott Cam both taking jabs at their expense.
“This one’s, uh, minimalistic,” Cam told Blaze, as they went down the line of letterboxes to an empty post where Sharon and Ankur’s should have been.
“I was going to say, is it a disappearing one?” she asked.
“I think you all did amazing – except the people that didn’t turn up of course,” Blaze told the contestants, before awarding the challenge’s $10,000 prize to Tom and Sarah-Jane for their ornate effort.
Sharon and Ankur are having a decidedly mixed time on The Block so far this season, with their first room receiving low scores and the next winning the week. Despite that win, Sharon has made no secret of the fact she’s struggling to adjust to life on The Block.
“I’m really not enjoying it, and I haven’t enjoyed it. This whole thing is so hectic,” she said as the couple rushed to finish their room before reveals on Sunday’s episode.
“And then all I can see is my future, of 10, 11 more weeks of this. I used to be a really bubbly, happy person, and then a week ago I came on The Block.
“I want to leave. No hot showers, there is no heating, mud … I do hate it here.”
