Former Australia’s Got Talent winner Jack Vidgen has made a triumphant return to the spotlight, performing for the first time in five years on Sunday night’s episode of The Voice.

The 22-year-old wowed the crowd with his stunning rendition of Adele’s “Hello”, also managing to turn all four coaches’ chairs in the process.

Coaches Delta Goodrem and Guy Sebastian recognised Vidgen as soon as their chairs turned, with both admitting they were shocked to see the former teen heart-throb on The Voice stage.

Boy George and Kelly Rowland were both impressed by Vidgen’s vocals but somewhat confused by the fact he had received such a warm reception from the show’s audience.

“Do you normally get this reaction when you do perform?” a puzzled George asked.

“I haven’t performed in like five years,” Vidgen replied.

“George he’s like very well known here,” Sebastian explained. “I’m just shocked to see you like on stage, I’m so glad to see you and your voice — my gosh.”

“Seriously though, when they said that we were going to have the biggest voices ever I didn’t know they meant this big, I did not know this was possible,” Goodrem added. “Where have you been these last five years?”

“I stopped singing five years ago … I think I just burnt out, I just fell out of love with singing,” Vidgen said.

“What about now?” George asked.

“You know what, it’s taken years and years for me to actually want to step on a stage and love it,” Vidgen replied.

“And that was the most incredible moment I think I’ve had in five years.”

Vidgen explained the “crazy” experience of him winning Australia’s Got Talent had created many opportunities for him, including moving to Los Angeles at age 16.

“I went over there and I just think I hit a lot of road blocks and I got exposed to a lot of things that I just don’t think was great to be exposed to at that age as well,” he told the coaches.

“It’s really scary to be alone and hit rock bottom. I think it was just kind of a snowball effect for me, it was me as well believing everything that people were saying about me once I became more well known.”

Vidgen had chosen to give music one more go on The Voice as the show would mean he had a mentor and “someone who was caring”.

“I want to share my narrative through singing and music and writing, it’s showing the beautiful parts of pain, that’s what I want to do in life,” he said.

“You pick who you need to pick,” Sebastian replied. “But do it knowing that there is a lot of expectations on you at a young age but you owe nobody anything right now. Look out for you and just be you.”

It was the former Australian Idol winner’s speech that won him over, with Vidgen opting to work with Sebastian.

As Vidgen made his way off stage with his new mentor, the other coaches were visibly touched by the young singer’s journey.

“That’s a heavy soul,” Rowland remarked. “I can just feel it, it’s so heavy.”

‘I WORKED IN RETAIL, I WORKED IN A NURSING HOME’

Vidgen was only 14 years old when he won Australia’s Got Talent in 2011, with the accolade transforming the young teen’s life forever.

“Winning Australia’s Got Talent as a 14-year-old I went from being just some kid on the Northern Beaches to not really being able to go anywhere without someone recognising me,” Vidgen recalled on Sunday night’s episode of The Voice.

“I was signed with a label, put out two albums, I was travelling around Australia just doing gigs.”

Despite being on a career high Vidgen said things soon got “pretty crazy pretty quickly”, with the singer coming to terms with his sexuality while in the spotlight.

“I think somewhere along the line I just started to listen to people too much,” he said.

“I remember doing an interview and the interviewer asked me if I have a girlfriend or a boyfriend. And I remember feeling so messed up, like ‘oh my God does someone know something?’ It was so weird to be asked that and not knowing how to answer it.

“I was going through puberty in front of the whole country, but when you’re trying to work out whether you’re gay or not it’s not the easiest thing to do.”

Vidgen also experienced the dark side of fame, with Facebook pages dedicated to him featuring death threats and negativity.

“That stuff does get to you. I just felt empty, it’s really scary. I was disconnecting with music, I was disconnecting from myself,” Vidgen said.

“I've experienced fame and money and everything and I’ve also experienced the opposite. I worked in retail, I worked in a nursing home in dementia care and now I’m doing The Voice because I miss singing, I miss music.

“It’s taken me so long to get to a place where that I love it again.”

Vidgen acknowledged that with his return to the spotlight there would be attention, especially around his appearance, the singer has admitted to getting lip fillers.

“I’m not little Jack Vidgen anymore, I’m 22 years old, I obviously look different,” he said.

“ I think there will definitely be scrutiny but I’m the most comfortable I’ve ever been in my own skin at the moment. I’m just here to sing, it’s all I want to do.”
