The Masked Singer Australia: Osher Gunsberg reveals the truth about the celebrity reveals
Osher Gunsberg has come clean about the sneaky trick they used to hide the Masked Singers’ identities from the studio audience.
Osher Gunsberg has set the record straight about The Masked Singer’s biggest mystery (apart from who the actual singers are).
Australia has fallen head over heels for Channel 10s bonkers new show with 1.16 million people tuning in for Monday’s premiere (five city metro) and 1.05 million watching episode two.
But as thousands of people took to Twitter to play along with the guessing game, many wondered how exactly the identity of the 12 masked singers has been kept a secret given the show was prerecorded a couple of months ago in front of a studio audience.
Are you telling me that not one person in this massive studio audience has leaked who the celebs are?! ð¤ #MaskedSingerAU

So how has the audience that were at the taping not spilled who takes off the mask?#MaskedSingerAU

So how did they pull it off? As host Osher Gunsberg explained to news.com.au, the studio audience wasn’t actually present when the reveals were filmed, so those reaction scenes we’ve seen in both episodes, well, they’re not legit.
“To make sure that everyone could play along and to make sure it was fair for everybody, we kept the audience there until the very, very last moment and then we pretty much emptied the studio of everyone,” the Channel 10 star said.
“There were maybe only eight people in the room when it happened. No one who wasn’t supposed to be there was there.
“We made some camera people walk out. In the control room, they basically hit record on the machines and walked out. We didn’t even have a photographer!

“Every entrance and exit was guarded by security … we protected it really well and I’m really proud of how we did.”
All 12 celebrities have now performed on the show with former Big Brother host Gretel Killeen and cricket legend Brett Lee being the only two unmasked singers so far.
Some of the stars have seriously impressive voices (we’re looking at you Lion and Unicorn) and as a result viewers have speculated the artists are miming.
SO ARE THEY SINGING LIVE OR IS IT PRE-RECORDED? I NEED TO KNOW THESE THINGS. #MaskedSingerAU

Hey #MaskedSingerAU, why give mics when they're masked, they're surely not singing live then?! ð¤

How is that mic consistently picking up this âlive vocalâ from the octopus as it is waved around in front of the mask? #MaskedSingerAU

But that’s definitely not the case, according to Gunsberg, who told news.com.au the masked singers are “absolutely” performing live.
“Our costume designer Tim Chappel is incredible. He’s won a Tony and an Oscar for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. He designed the masks in such a way that they can fit a microphone inside the mask which picks up the vocals, and I believe the audio guys do a mix of that one with the handheld mic,” he explained.
The Masked Singer continues next Monday night at 7.30pm on Channel 10
