The Block auctioneer answers huge finale question

An auctioneer who featured in last night’s disastrous Block finale has finally addressed the one thing we all want to know.

An auctioneer who featured in last night’s chaotic finale of The Block: Tree Change has answered the burning question left in its wake: what the hell happens now?

While winners Omar and Oz took home a record $1,686,666.66 after going first in the auction line-up and selling their four-bedroom Gisborne home for $5,6666,666.66, it quickly went downhill with season favourites Tom and Sarah-Jane making just $20,000.99 immediately afterwards.

Rachel and Ryan made a decent profit of $169,000.50 during post-auction negotiations, but the situation was bleak for the two remaining teams – Sharon and Ankur and Jenny and Dylan – who are still awaiting results after their properties were passed in.

As of 9pm on Sunday night, both homes remained unsold.

Not the outcome they were hoping for.

Addressing the drama on Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa show this morning, Jenny and Dylan’s auctioneer, Damien Cooley, explained what would happen now following their failure to sell.

“So they’ll go back to market, they’ll most likely be either looking for a new buyer, or possibly one of the buyers that was there that didn’t place a bid,” he told the radio hosts.

“They’ll go into negotiations now, and – I’m assuming – most likely have an asking price of a number that’s well above what that publicised reserve was.

“That reserve – bearing in mind, it’s just a low number that they want the contestants to make more than – I would have thought that they should be looking for something between 4.3 and 4.7 or 4.8 million (dollars), something in that range.”

Even host Scott Cam was visibly frustrated during the auction.

Cooley’s comments came after Fitzy and Wippa also spoke with Block host Scott Cam, who admitted he’s still “flabbergasted” by last night’s auctions and questioned how the almost “identical homes” sold at a $1.5 million difference.

“I don’t know … If anyone can explain what happened, I’d love to hear it,” Cam said. “Everyone, crew, cameramen, producers, we were all flabbergasted.

“One joint goes for $5.6 million and the next joint goes for $4.1 million – and they’re virtually identical.”
