New Bachelor suffers brutal rejection

The Bachelor returns to screens with a much-needed reboot tonight – and the new format makes for some hard-to-watch scenes in episode one.

By now most fans of the show will know that this season is called The Bachelors, plural. There are three different Bachelors looking for love this season, with 30 women vying for their affections.

But reality TV fans tired of the familiar format of previous Bachelor season premieres - an endless stream of women, emerging from their limos in the driveway of the Bach mansion to throw themselves at one rather smug man – should enjoy the twist coming in tonight’s premiere.

This time around, the three Bachelors first go on a series of speed dates to find the 10 women each they want to invite on to the show.

It’s a surprisingly brutal process, with all three going on several dates that seem to be going well – until they thank the poor girl for her time and abruptly leave, rose in hand, leaving her to realise her Bachelor experience amounts to a minute or so of airtime before being hastily dumped.

By far the worst offender is Jed, a drummer and Machine Gun Kelly lookalike – let’s call him Water Pistol Jenny. He cycles through a seemingly endless array of dates with eligible women, turning on his heels and bidding them a quick farewell at the end of each encounter, rose in hand.

One poor girl even guides him through a couple’s Tantric yoga demonstration before she’s rejected.

But the women all cope with rejection better than Jed himself, as you can see in this exclusive clip from tonight’s premiere.

A coffee date with a girl named Catelyn ends with Jed declaring her “perfect” and offering her his rose, telling her he wants to get to know her more.

She doesn’t accept it, saying that after a few minutes in his company, she thinks they’d be better off friends.

“Please don’t hate me,” she calls after him as he storms out.

“Does she not think I’m hot? What a bash to the ego,” he fumes to a producer outside.

“It was brutal, absolutely brutal. I thought I was the one making those decisions … but apparently not.”

The new season of The Bachelors premieres 7:30pm tonight on Ten.
