Abbie Chatfield has lifted the lid on one of the biggest mysteries surrounding reality TV: How do they make money?

The former reality star-turned Hit Network radio host told listeners she pocketed $10,000 in total from the 2019 Bachelor season featuring Matt Agnew, adding that she was only allowed to start earning money from her then-newly-found Instagram fame three months after the show aired.

The 26-year-old added that she made sure to keep her former job as a property analyst while filming, so “didn’t really care” how much the stint would earn her.

“I had common sense. I had a job,” she told co-host Rohan Edwards with a laugh.

Abbie's stint on the show ended up being quite lucrative – but she had to wait to start using her platform to make money afterwards.

“I had a job and didn’t really care, people were like, ‘how do we make money? And I was like, ‘Don’t quit your job to go on a reality show!’”

The runner-up from season 7 of The Bachelor went on to explain that because she was on the show until the finale, her $90-a-day salary worked out much higher come tax time.

“I got paid $90 a day but for me it was much more … I didn’t work for three months, so if you’re there for a while, it’s not taxed or something.

“It’s tax free, I got money back on tax that year, I came out with no expenses. I came out with $10,000, it was great.’

Chatfield also spilled on exactly what contestants are allowed to bring to the mansion, and what the food situation is during their stay.

“You’re allowed to take two suitcases for three months but about halfway through we were allowed to do an order from online shopping because we all ran out of clothes,” she said.

As for how food is arranged in the house, Chatfield recalled: “We write down everything we want and then we have a minder, so someone living with us like a babysitter in the house and they will order it for us”.

Abbie went on to appear on Bachelor in Paradise.

She added that she couldn’t make money from paid promotions until three months after the finale aired under an agreement with Channel 10 — but the second time around on Bachelor in Paradise “was smart enough” to have the clause removed from her contract.

It comes as the Daily Mail reports Married At First Sight contestants are banned from taking control of their social media channels — and receiving their coveted blue ticks — until a month after the show has finished airing in the UK. The ninth series of Married At First Sight Australia started airing in the UK on Monday, February 21.

Chatfield claimed the rule was likely because the show has its own sponsorship deals, so networks don’t want their talent promoting other brands that might conflict with advertising during the show.
