Married At First Sight’s Alyssa is getting trolled online... but is it fair?

Married At First Sight’s Alyssa is being brutally trolled online but there’s a confronting reason why this kind of reaction isn’t fair.

MAFS Ep 32: Alyssa and Duncan have different takeaways from recent homestay (Channel 9)

Australia hates Alyssa from Married At First Sight, and I am hating on Australia for being so predictably sexist.

Alyssa is getting trolled with the kind of venom that we only reserve for women.

She’s experiencing mass ridicule, and I keep thinking about Olivia Frazer from 2022’s season of MAFS.

Remember she leaked someone’s nude, and everyone felt entitled to send her death threats?

Olivia tearfully admitted that she felt “more hated than Putin,” in Australia, and she wasn’t far off from being right.

Alyssa got dumped last night by her television ‘husband’ Duncan. It was the right move by Duncan. Alyssa wasn’t behaving like a catch but more like a smug Kookai store manager.

She kept gaslighting him, telling Duncan he needed to change and also making it clear she only planned to see him once a fortnight after the experiment. I see my garbage man more than Alyssa planned to see her ‘husband’.

She deserved to get broken up with, and I do hope she’s learnt some hard lessons from this. Like, you can’t expect your boyfriend to wave at you and be able to play tennis at the same time.

What I don’t understand is the public’s extreme hatred of Alyssa. They don’t just want her to be dumped. They want her to be punished.

To give you a vibe of the comment section in relation to Alyssa at the moment. They vary from some stuff I can’t repeat, light sexism, funny commentary and full-on hate.

Someone commented: “Hearing her sob somehow made everything right in the world again!”

One person accused her of being “contradicting”, while other comments were too graphic to publish.

The cruelty being shoved in Alyssa’s way is confronting.

Among these messages are hundreds of comments supporting Duncan, advocating for what a great guy he is and how he deserves infinitely better.

It really is proof that Australia loves to rally around a man and turn on a woman.

Don’t believe me? Well, it is such a massive contrast to how Bronte is being treated.

Bronte, of course, was paired up with Harrison, who behaved similarly to Alyssa.

He swapped communication for lying and wasn’t kind to Bronte. Like, Alyssa, he is getting roasted in the comments section, although minus threats to his safety. But Bronte isn’t getting the hero edit that Duncan has been given.

While Duncan is seen as a sweet, kind man that was taken advantage of, she’s a weak idiot for trying to make her relationship work.

When Bronte finally ended things with Harrison, she addressed how she felt the public saw her on her Instagram.

“’Fake’, ‘Naive’, and ‘Stupid’ are just a few of the things I have been labelled since being a part of this experiment,” she wrote.

“I wanted this to work for so many reasons that no one will ever know or understand. In reality, people’s opinions of me are none of my business.”

Bronte didn’t even finish the experiment with Harrison, and she was mocked for staying with him. Meanwhile, Duncan and Alyssa made it all the way to the end, and there’s no mass judgment being sent Duncan’s way; he isn’t seen as “naive”. He is seen as a nice guy.

This brings me back to Alyssa, on face value, I get why people have a problem with her and love Duncan, fair enough, but if you dig a bit deeper, you can’t ignore the fact that the public does seem to relish in hating women more.

I’m not saying that Alyssa’s behaviour shouldn’t be questioned and discussed; she hasn’t behaved well.

Still, I don’t think anyone deserves the kind of hatred that is currently being thrown her way, and I do think people are very quick to turn criticising women into a sport with no rules, empires or ethics.

Look how quickly we jump to Duncan’s defence but ridicule Bronte; sure, making fun of Harrison has become this season’s bonding moment, but people aren’t making fun of Alyssa. They are destroying her online and people think she deserves it.
