Josh and Luke Packham break ‘number one’ rule on The Block
We’re only one episode into The Block, and already one team have unapologetically broken the show’s “number one rule.”
The fiery twins of Love Island fame have already ruffled some feathers on the set of The Block, kicking off the first feud of the season in Sunday’s premiere episode.
Luke and Josh Packham were not impressed when country singer Kirsty pointed out they’d broken The Block’s “number one rule” while completing their first challenge in this year’s Hampton, Victoria cul-de-sac.
With the teams tasked with designing a bedroom in just two days and a budget of $5000 to win the advantage of having first choice of property, Kirsty was shocked to find the boys using their tradies to paint.
As Scott Cam pointed out during the episode, rule number one in the “Block Bible” is that contestants must do their own painting.

“Unfortunately I’ve got to be the bearer of bad news … You know the rules are only contestants can paint,” Kirsty told them when she poked her head around and saw their tradies with rollers in hand.
“Who told you that?,” asked Luke.
“That’s like the number one rule on the show,” she responded.

Speaking with producers, the brothers made it clear they weren’t happy with her approach.
“It’s not something that Luke and I would normally do, go and pull someone up if they’re doing the wrong thing,” said Josh.
“We don’t do the dibber-dobber thing,” Luke added.
Meanwhile, Kirsty told producers she just wanted to make things “fair” in the competition.
“I don’t want to be the bad guy or anything, but everyone’s got to stick to the rules I guess and make it a fair, even playing field,” she said.
“I guess Keith and Dan would come along and tell you that if they were here,” Kirsty was seen telling the boys, to which Luke hit back: “Well they’re not here, maybe you should go and get your trades to help you paint while they’re not here.”
Fuming, he added to the camera: “There’s dibber dobbers and there’s others who look the other way … but obviously they’re competitive and they want to win. That’s the way she wants to play it, we’ll remember it and that’s fine.”
“Goody two shoes,” he mumbled elsewhere while furiously continuing to paint, adding a curse word that was bleeped out in production.
Viewers were quick to call out the brothers:
Straight away the twins try to make it about the dibber dobber female instead of them breaking the rules #TheBlock

I think Josh and Luke might be setting some new #TheBlock records. Not sure anyone has ever blown their entire budget AND broken the rules of the show before the first episode is even finished. Can't wait for them to meet Keith!

She didnât dob she let u know the rule ⦠And sorry arenât you big fans of the show how did you not know #TheBlock
— Mad (@Madstar42) August 8, 2021
If they have watched the show for years with the family they would know about this rule. Donât make this about her being a dibber dobber. This is about you breaking a well known rule that even viewers know about #TheBlock

#TheBlock so ... the boys are already breaking rules and think they shouldn't be called out on it? They're basically every entitled teenage jock I went to highschool with.

Later on, the argument took a turn when it became apparent Kirsty and husband Jesse had “borrowed” a tradie from the twins without asking.
“It became a little hypocritical because then obviously I’d already paid my plasterer to hang around and they’ve got him working in their room on my budget,” Luke said when he found out, laughing in disbelief.
“You can’t be using other people’s tradies without asking, there’s gotta be something in the rule book for that,” said Josh.
After confronting the couple for the sneaky tradie move, Kirsty and Jesse backed off, calling the twins’ outrage “100 per cent retaliation” for their earlier face-off.
“I guess Luke got a little shirty when I told him his trades weren’t allowed to paint so we was obviously on the prowl,” said Kirsty.
“The difference was we weren’t breaking any rules,” she added.
Altercation aside — Kirsty and Jesse’s coastal-styled bedroom was a hit with a judges, scoring them the first challenge win of the season.
The twins came in second, missing the mark with their “tacky” LED downlighting, as Darren Palmer put it.
And in third place was quirky Melbourne couple Tanya and Vito, who were criticised for “overstyling” their room.
While the drama looks to have started early this season, the introduction of Block faves Mitch and Mark and Ronnie and Georgia in Monday’s episode is sure to add fuel to the fire.
The Block continues tomorrow night from 7.30 on Channel 9
