Grant Denyer broke down in tears in the I’m a Celeb camp as he spoke about a near-death experience.

In a scene that is set to air on Channel 10 tonight, Denyer, 43, recounts the time he nearly died while rally car driving.

Two years ago he crashed into a tree going 165km an hour.

Speaking to the camera, the star broke down as he discussed his history with the sport and how, despite his passion, it wasn’t worth keeping it up now that he has a family.

“I put a lot of chips in the motorsport basket, and I’m prepared to take those risks but I don’t want to hurt the people that are around me,” he said through tears.

Fellow I’m A Celeb contestant Jess Eva asked Denyer about the possibility of his kids ever wanting to get into motorsports.

“What if your kids want to rally drive? Would you let them?” she asked.

Hilariously, he replied with a story about his 5-year-old daughter, Scout. “My littlest one, I caught around the side of the house, sideways in a go-kart, one handed, with a twistie in the other hand. I was like ‘yeah that’s my girl’.”

Denyer and his racing partner were competing in the Lake Mountain sprint in 2017 in Melbourne as part of the Australian Rally Championships when the accident occurred.

A Ten spokeswoman said at the time: “Grant sustained bruising to his lower back while Dale [his co-driver] has a suspected broken leg. Grant is walking around and is in good spirits.”

Denyer pursued a racing career in parallel with his TV work, but sustained a serious back injury in September 2008 while covering a monster truck demonstration on Seven’s Sunrise.

After that accident, which left him bedridden for eight weeks, Denyer said it “certainly caused me to re-evaluate all aspects of my life”.

“Racing and TV are my two passions, and once the doctors gave the clearance, I was chomping at the bit to race again. Many questioned why I would want to race after such as rough time, however life isn’t a dress rehearsal — this is it — I love it and I want to experience all aspects of life to the max. Wrapping myself in cotton wool wasn’t an option and you have to accept the fact that life is full of unknowns — the accident could have happened just going to the corner store for a loaf of bread.”
